I actually bought two 1983 Sciroccos.
The first from 160K to 195K had absolutely no problems. We loved it so much (I had bought it for my girlfriend) that I recommended her mother buy the same car. Her car had only 64,000 miles when we purchased it.
Her Scirocco had brake problems constantly (always brought it back to the dealer, but continued to be an issue).
Instrumentation lights would go off for no reason, then come back on later, gauges would also stop working, then start again.
Transmission had major problems that never seemed to be fixed.
Engine had similar un-resolvable problems.
I just don't get it. How can two identical cars (right down to color and rims) be so different. The car with the high mileage (almost 200K) always started, ran great, never had a problem. The other with low mileage (60K) constantly had problems and broke down. I figured one was built on Tuesday and the other Friday afternoon :-)
When dealing with used cars, you can't really make comparisons between the two. Heck, the one with fewer miles could have been involved in a flood or something. Now, if you would have bought both of these cars new, I think you would have a valid point. Otherwise, I think you got stuck with a car that someone didn't take care of at all and one that was taken care of well.
