1985 Volkswagen Scirocco review from North America
"Beyond a bargain for what this car is capable of.."
What things have gone wrong with the car?
I haven't had this car for very long, but I have made some repairs, which I think may be expected from a 16 year old car.
Replaced the oil temp unit (did this twice, as I learned that the first guy that "repaired" the problem used not-so-top-quality parts). Because the units (there's 2 of them) had become disengaged from the motor, oil was leaking -- to the point where I was having to put about one to two quarts of oil in EACH WEEK before I knew what the problem was. Oil light finally went off and took it to a mechanic and discovered what the problem was. No problems with that any more.
Apart from that, only replacing the core alternator, timing belts and gaskets.
General comments?
An awesome and beautiful car to own and behold. I get compliments on it all the time. Fortunately for me, the previous owner took extremely good care of this car and had all records (even saved the showroom price sticker).
Handling is excellent, I guess the only complaint I would have is the fact that no one is really 100% comfortable riding in that car. I'm glad to have this as my first car and I don't think I would ever sell it.
