1988 Volkswagen Scirocco 16V from North America - Comments

"I would say this car is a great car to buy overall, just be willing to pay a bit more for parts"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

I haven't had much as for problems, but some of the typical qwerks that this model has.

-Unstable idle (mainly 16v cars).

-Air conditioning idler pully started to make noise at 180k.

-Typical drivers seat bolster wear.

-Fuel pump made some loud noise at 175k.

-Exhaust shield rattles

-16V dual downpipe flex-joint leakage at 173k (note very expensive for a replacement downpipe (average price of $700can)

-Tachometer stopped working at 191k.

Cost of parts is higher than usual, but to be expected.

General comments?

This car is very peppy for the size of the motor, All though its got 123hp stock there is lots you can do for it to liven it up even further. Not much you can do about the lack of low-end torque.

The car handles very well and with a good set of sport suspension, wheels, and tires... the car can truely handle like it was on rails.

Comfort is good, but very limited to the average user. As the cabin height is a little low so good comfort for the taller than usual or heavier than ususal people may not be very good. I am 180pounds and stand at 6foot. With a little tweaking of the seats and angles, I fit good and comfortable. Long drives are a little differant though.

Over all looks and appearence is great. The average person that doesn't know much about cars is always surprised it's a Volkswagon. Its got classic sporty looks and refinement with very little to change in my eyes. What I personaly did is add the European bumpers, European headlights and a nice set of rims /tires. Oh I lowered it 1.5" also and that really helped the look of the car also :o)

I got the same car, I pretty much agree with you with everything, but my main thing I would definatly say is its not a car that you can do much with in the sense of practical useage, its just too small. Mines a daily driver and being 28, I am finding that I just can't move or haul things in this car. Room is suitable, but with a car this size, you can't take much for cargo. I guess its the old age and practicality (growing up hahah) kicking in.

But being in a Big 3 city, I get plenty of looks wondering what the heck a Scirocco is or that typical response, It's a VW??? I still get a kick outta the when I am at a stop light and ya can see the people mouthing it lol.
