2005 Volkswagen Touran S review from UK and Ireland
"Good car, let down by the cost of ownership and a major fault"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Oil leak from engine at 12,000 miles.
DVD player screen stop working after 2 years.
ABS/ESP module at 38,000 miles.
General comments?
The car is very well built and a great family car. Very comfortable for long journeys. Handling is OK, but not great. Steering has little feedback and the body control is not as good as the competition. It will under steer as soon as you push it. But then it's not a performance car.
The interior is very functional and very black. There are lots of storage space. 7 seats is useful, but does not fold flat like other cars I've seen.
Cost of ownership is very high. Dealers are quite good, but cost of servicing is very high. Cam belt need replacement at 4 year or 40,000 miles at a cost of £450 is not competitive. I know Ford diesel engine cam belt is changed at 10 years or 100,000 miles.
Biggest let down is the ABS/ESP module fault developed 6 months out of warranty. I was quoted £1200 to repair. I did a search on the web, this fault is very common with Golf & Touran. I don't expect any car to have such a fault at 36,000 miles. Dealer & VW customer service were not helpful.
After this experience, I will not get another VW for a long time.
