1976 Volkswagen Type II Sopru Camper review from Australia and New Zealand
"The pinnacle of human endeavour"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Absolutely nothing.
Zip.
Zilch.
General comments?
Very possibly the greatest automobile of all time.
The odometer only has five digits, but from what I can gather from the previous owner and the mechanic who has looked after it for 20 years, it has probably done 280,000, but it could easily be 380,000, considering I did 50,000 in just over a year. Still the original motor and gearbox.
Resprayed it after inevitable rust was cut out. Lookin' good.
I lived in it for over a year, during which I was always comfortable, ate very well and usually had cold beer in the fridge. I was sharing the accommodation with my wife and two large-ish dogs. We were a little cramped sometimes, but it beats driving an enormous mobile home.
The bus managed to get through some of the crappiest tracks I have ever driven on, even 4WD only terrain, with a ton of gear on board. It would then sit happily at 100 kph on the highway. Mostly. Headwinds and steep hills slow us down a bit.
I now drive it daily on winding mountain roads and still enjoy flinging it into bends, which it handles with aplomb unless there are mid-corner bumps. These can be very interesting...
I will die before I sell my van.
