1986 Volkswagen Vanagon GL 7-passenger Syncro review from North America
"The most versatile vehicle I have ever owned"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
At 30,000 miles, head gaskets replaced under warranty.
At about 70,000 miles, I had to replace the power steering system.
The air conditioning unit is a major weakness for this vehicle, but since I live in the Northwest, it is not a major issue. When it is working, it does a good job of cooling things off, but it does not want to continue to work without frequent and expensive maintenance.
At approximately 135,000 miles, I rebuilt the engine, replaced the clutch, serviced all brakes, and replaced the hydraulic slave for the clutch.
General comments?
The Vanagon Syncro is a great utility vehicle. While it is underpowered, the gear ratios provided by the four speed plus compound low transmission and all wheel drive, allow me to tow a 5 by 8 foot utility trailer and small boat trailers, and go wherever I need or want to go.
With the back bench seat folded down, I can load 4 by 8 foot sheets goods. With the middle seat removed (a 15 minute job), bulky items are easily loaded through the side door.
We have made numerous trips through out the United States. On one trip of over 6,000 miles, there were four adults, two children and all of our luggage, and after almost three weeks on the road, we were all still talking to each other.
The Syncro (All Wheel Drive) has operated without any problems. I have driven on sandy beaches and snowy roads without any problems. It has the capability to go more places than I have the courage to attempt.
After the warranty expired, I have either done all of the required maintenance myself or have gone to a well qualified independent mechanic. I have never had the vehicle fail to perform.
It is a great camping vehicle. The back bench folds down to make a queen size bed. There is plenty of room for equipment and gear without having to having to pack to the nth degree.
It is a very comfortable vehicle for road trips. When driven within the vehicle's capacity, it is an extremely accommodating vehicle.
What is very pleasing is that after twenty-one years of service, the Vanagon Syncro is appreciating in value. There were only a limited number of Vanagon Syncros sold in the United States between 1986 and 1991. It is being recognized as one of the most capable all wheel drive vehicles manufactured by Volkswagen. The amount of money that enthusiasts are willing to spend to maintain, rebuild or un
upgrade is almost beyond belief, but, as there are no alternative vehicles available that provide the same level of utility, it is easier to understand.
