"If you want dependability, get this car"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Transmission mount, twice.

Basic maintenance, oil changes, air filter

belts, hoses, ect.

The car looks like crap, well aged.

General comments?

This car I bought for delivery use, put 50,000 hard miles on the car in less than a year. It took it with just oil changes every 10,000 miles.

Loud as a willy's jeep in motion, it screams through blizzards at 50 miles per hour (no bull). She has never let me down. Slow, loud, pretty low fuel economy, this has taken 2 and a half years of hard use and still to this day starts as easily as it would brand new. For a 34 year old car, it has exceeded any expectations, and has surprised all who have seen this car in action. Being the engine needs a top bottom rebuild, and every body panel has at least one dent. I bought a '79 244 with B21/f with hopes to rebuild the car that has served me well above and beyond any vehicle, period. Off road, on road, always pushing the car to it's limits, through 4 sets of tires, excessive amounts of gas, and oil, this car never failed to deliver it's best, every time.

What kind of mileage did you get with this Volvo? I'm only getting 14 mpg, is that about what you got or is it lower?

Thanks!

I have a 1969 144 with B20 S. engine. Two carbs

S.U.HS6. 4 Speed M40 gear box.

I've had it for four years and I'm about to start re-building in the spring of 2009. And I can barely wait.

I love the car, and to experience the drive for me will be very exciting.

My 1970 Volvo 145 averages 17 city and 20 highway with the 32/36 Weber Carburetor. These cars have a 4.11:1 rear end and even at 55 mph the engine is revving at 3,200 rpm. At 70 mph the engine sounds like a U-haul truck and at 80 it sounds like something really big is going to happen. This is one car that you can drive like you hate it. One afternoon before starting the engine, I heard a voice from nowhere say, "Go on, give me your best shot".

I rebuilt the engine December of 2004. The original factory cam shaft had lobes that literally became circular over time (99,500 miles). That explained why I had virtually no pick up power. Not so now. I put in a regular economy cam and bored the cylinders .030". I also had installed hardened valve seats. After about 18,000 miles later I can tell that the engine is finally broken in. It revs easier and I also have readjusted the carb to a leaner mixture. The mileage also increased about 1.5 mpg. The engine also giddies up and goes full bore when I need it too. Keep these cars minimally maintained and they will last not years, but decades like mine.
