1989 Volvo 240 DL Wagon review from North America
"If you can't love a 240, you aren't worth it"
General comments?
The car is in my posession for 2 weeks now... and it is exactly what I was looking for!
WHY manual?
Performance is a lot better and got me 26,5 to 28mpgs!
I am what you might call a boring driver...
I brake early, and don't accelerate to the rev-limiter.
But cruising at 85mph in Indiana is no problem at all, my 5spd can still hit 110 if I feel like it -
I love it!
Manual tows upto 3300lbs! (Volvo spec.)
The wagon is in a surprisingly good shape for the mileage!
Still 1st engine, 1st transmission, repaired clutch.
The trunk is HUGE!
Maintenance (did a tune up, fluid, filter change, brake job and other small things) is VERY easy to do!
Under the pretty large hood you find an ancient 2.3l inline 4cyl. engine. Simple, indestructible and theres enough room for to work without problems!
RWD makes working on the drivetrain easy.
Handling:
Mine got extra strut braces etc. the handling is far from sporty, but feels OK.
Drivers of old (er) Volvos are probably seen as kinda wierd and a bit nerdish. But if your budget is slim, and you are a rational thinking person, a decent 240 wagon is still a good choice. Most spare/maintenance parts are cheaper then for other cars!
Since I have no long-term data yet, I will update this post in the future.
