1992 Volvo 240 SE review from UK and Ireland
"Solid, durable and comfortable car which holds its value well"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
The most persistent problem is poor cold starting at temperatures between 5C and 10C which seems to be a problem with the temperature sensor on the fuel injection. At temperatures below 0C it starts first time.
Brakes are not good having a very dead feel and the handbrake needs constant adjustment.
Electrical items can be temperamental, but the fitting of a heavy duty battery has cured those problems.
General comments?
Performance is acceptable for an automatic in such a heavy car - kickdown is very effective, but the overdrive has to be switched out to maintain speed on motorway gradients.
Fuel consumption is atrocious around town dropping to as little as 12 mpg in cold weather. However on a long trip 30+ mpg is easily obtainable especially if speed is kept down to 65mph.
Cabin comfort is excellent as is visibility from the driving seat.
The car is solid and built like a tank - which also means far fewer drivers in tin boxes try and cut you up.
