1975 Volvo 264 GL review from Australia and New Zealand
"A good specimen is hard to find"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Not much has gone wrong with this car, It has generally been very reliable solid vehicle provided it has been serviced regularly and oil changes are done regularly with a good synthetic oil.
I have replace the fuel pump 3-4 times and various mounts and bushes and have had to replace the timeing chain, head gasket, waterpump and steering rack recently.
I also changed all 4 shocks and had to replace the cracked leather seats with cloth ones.
I am currently driving it with a sump oil leak and a slight play in the transmission or differential (I'm not sure which yet?).
The good news is that a lot of the 240 parts are interchangeable and that's fantastic since there were so many of the 240s made.
General comments?
The car is very heavy on fuel and replacement parts (new) are very expensive. The car has sufficient power for my needs and you can feel the extra torque that the 6 provides over its 4 cylinder sybling.
The turning cirle is fantastic in the 2 series, however the steering is very light and this makes the handling some what vague. The 2 series is particularly bad in wet weather where the back tends to skid easily.
Its fairly comfortable practical and reliable (and I feel stylish) car... I Love It, however I wouldn't recommend you buy one unless its been fastidiously maintained.
