1988 Volvo 340 340DL from UK and Ireland - Comments

"Tough reliable, makes the Allegro look attractive"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Clutch had to be replaced.

Prop shaft feel off twice in 6 weeks, although this is due to poor workmanship when the clutch was changed and the garage admitted this and refunded all my money and put it right.

The brake lights are loose so sometimes the headlights come on when you press the brake pedal.

General comments?

I went to get a new door handle the other day from the breakers yard and the owner sneered at me for wanting to send any time or money on such an undesirable car and said they don't keep 340/360 spares any more, they just crush them. The mans a fool!

I've only had my Volvo since January this year, but I've already done over 9 miles in it and I'm very fond of it.

This is not the car for drivers who want alloy wheels and tinted glass. Try customizing one of these and your friends will laugh at you.

But If you want a cheap runabout and some thing that's a bit more rugged than an old Astra or Escort than this is the car for you.

The main draw back with these old 340's is the lack of power which is mainly noticable on steep hills or when the cars fully loaded.

I recently got a new job and I can now afford a new small hatchback, but I'm in no hurry to get rid of the Volvo.

Hello,

Glad you like your 340. I had one for over five years and finally sold it and bought a volvo 740 GLE estate which I also love. (I needed the extra room) My 340 GL was a 1985 model in blue with the renault 1.4 litre engine and it was extremely reliable apart from an irritating habit of refusing to start ever now and again after you had gone on a run and tried to restart. It would restart after resting for about 20 minutes. I never investigated and lived with it. It felt very spacious for a small car and very practically laid out, eg interior layout/ instuments. Not by any means fast, but adequate. Only left me stranded once in the time that I had it when the accelarator cable snapped. I think they make an ideal starter car for a young driver as I was. The 1.7 litre engine has more go in it or a volvo 360 GLT/S is very quick for a volvo with a 2 litre fuel injected volvo engine. I would buy another one as they are really cheap for what they are and they are really good. The scrapyard person can't of ever had one. You will probably be driving it for years to come and will get spares cheap as you can buy from scrapyards. James.
