1996 Volvo 460 DL review from Peru
"The best car for Peruvian roads"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
I only had this car for 3 months, from January to April 2006, so it's a very short period to evaluate it's reliability. Anyway, everything was OK, excepting the sound system, which apparently loved to ''eat'' cassettes, (later we changed it for a much better Pioneer CD player) and the dashboard that was broken by centre (that's common with all 460s) but it improved a lot by spending 2 hours with a screwdriver.
General comments?
After selling the Chrysler, we were looking for a discreet car that could let us leave in peace, we saw lots of Corollas, Civics and others until we found this green 1996 460 DL (we saw 2 other 460s including a silver GLT turbo, but it had the windshield cracked), we tested it and as soon as my dad drove it he fell in love with it and he said: Finally a nice car in my life!!!
The car was nice and run great, it was really powerful for a 2 litre car of its age. It was very funny to drive.
It was in a very good condition inside and out with no rust and everything working.
A very rare and tedious feature was the driver's seat belt alarm. GOD!!! It started every time the driver unfastened the seat belt and it sounded like a turn indicator, but stronger and faster... However I miss it.
The car's design is attractive and looks like a little 850, specially with GLT's 15 inch alloy wheels, body color bumpers and leather seats (Which mine didn't have).
I must say that this car is excellent and for anyone that is thinking to buy a used car in Peru for about 3.8K to 4.6K US$ this is the best buy as there are thousands of these cars on the streets and spare parts are easy to find while any independent mechanic can fix it for less than the Volvo dealer -which is not expensive. If you find a 1996 GLT Turbo with leather seats, 15 inch alloy wheels and power sunroof for 4.6k US$ (What isn't as easy as finding a DL, but not difficult.) don't think it twice and pick it up. You will live in peace and enjoy the car.
