1989 Volvo 480 review from UK and Ireland
"Individual car for enthusiastic individualists"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Alternator failed at 100,000 miles.
Exhaust manifold parted at 80,000 miles.
Anti-roll bar links unacceptably bent by 90,000 miles.
New radiator at 110,000 miles.
In addition to the usual clutch / exhaust / brakes, all replaced at 70,000 miles, there are a number of cruel & unusual things to expect:
Snapped clutch cable about every 12 months - carry a spare!
The rear lights are designed to leak - use a bathroom sealant!
Numerous blown bulbs, until the bulb failure light failed, then no problems!
ECU searches for idle speed, unsucessfully - see appropreate internet sites for remedies.
The bonnet sill drainholes plugged-up with leaves, flooding the air blower & ECU, resulting in blow fuel-pump fuse (not in fuse box).
General comments?
Although generally reliable, the numerous niggling faults means you will have to be an enthusiast as well.
The car is fairly quick if you keep the revs up, and handles well, although the suspension is hard, and jarring around town.
Fuel economy is good at 35 - 42 mpg. This is offset the cost of repairing all those niggling glitches.
Comfortable cabin, with lots of gizmos. The locks illuminate when the door handle is pulled - excellent idea. Pretty large boot, but rear passenger room notso-hotso.
A sturdy car, feels safe, little rust even in Northern Scotland.
A Volvo, designed by Dutchmen, built in Holland, with a Renault engine. Bizzare!
