1988 Volvo 740 GL from UK and Ireland - Comments

"An ultra reliable workhorse"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Front sidelight blew plus the fuse.

General comments?

Not the fastest of cars, but is still very responsive for such a heavy vehicle.

It's fourteen years old now and there's not a spot of rust on it. The interior is also very well maintained, almost as new.

A very comfortable car to drive.

I'm only getting about 23 miles per gallon out of it at the moment, but I think that's partly due to the need for a service.

When parked next to my Fathers brand new V70 it puts the new models to shame. You can tell the REAL Volvo!

I just wanted to comment I am from Canada and had a 740 gle 1988 and it was a sweet car no rust clean inside and the car would have lasted me many more years, but I am sad to say I lost my car in an accident Dec 13 03 and because my wife was driving a Volvo it saved her life. Some young Kid blew a red light and smashed into my car on the driver side. The car is now a write off and now I don't have my car. I was very proud of that car and spent many hours and sweet keeping up that car. In closing this is a very reliable car and it is very solid strong car and any one who has a 88 740 gle should be proud.

Thanks Cory.

I too used to be a proud owner of a 740 GLE -88. It truly is one of the best cars ever built, a genuine piece of motor history.

Volvo has continued building great cars, but without the personality that the 140-, 240- and 740-series consisted.

I am the proud owner of a 2002 elentra gt...

I am not in the wrong page, If I were to go broke, I would automatically get a 740 of that year.

I know what they are capable of.

A friend of mine had it.

Rust bucket it was... but when you step in...

LUXERY

for an 88

leather

seat wharmers

sunroof

electric everything...

Seats are like sofa's.

Lets say todays cars don't have 1/4 of that luxery.

(i would say Volvo still makes fantastic cars... but I would rather own a back weel drive... and I live in Canada with 6 months of snow... back weel isn't a problem if you know how to drive!)
