A lot have gone wrong in 1year!
Vacuum breather T joint next to the battery broke, replaced it with a Perodua Kancil's metal joint...
Bonnet lifter loosen.
Headlamp tilt adjust knob broke and let in water.. used the sticky black compound to seal it.
A vacuum hose melted... just taped it.
Metal radiator hose to the engine rusted and leaked...very2 expensive...USD200 for a used one.
Headlamp flickers and sometimes stayed on with the switch in OFF position... found out to be contact problem, which has been cleaned and fixed and came back after few months..
Anti roll bar mount worn... ridiculously pricey for that small thing.
Not to mention the brake pads too.
DSC light and check engine light came on... radiator fan running for a good 15minutes everytime after engine is shutdown... temperature was normal... found out to be the Mass Airflow Sensor...that's bout USD150 excluding labour and computer reset.
Engine light remained on...5 faults came on, cleaned the sensors and the EVAP emission ctrl thingy with electrical contact cleaner... after 3 visits to 2 workshops, 2 faults cleared, 3 remained... changed the rear O2 sensor costing USD240...problem solved, drove out the workshop, 5 minutes later, light came back on... after few resets and after using it for 4days, check engine light gone off...
The car handles okay, but no where near to my 1982 Golf GTI...
Acceleration is good, bout 7.8sec from 0-62mph
comfy, safe, but never reliable! maintenance is too costly, parts don't last, plastic bits under the hood brittled when touched, sensors are too sensitive and have short life-spends. it's a waste of money... my biggest regret so far... enough of the Volvo For Life sh**...1yr and 3months owning the car was hell... get something else... learn from other people's mistakes... get a VW probably... my 24yrs old car is even more reliable than this... definitely will never buy a VOLVO again... sold this for a SUZUKI SWIFT... of course, not to mention the depreciation...
It's funny, but Volvo and Mitsubishi's joint NedCar venture didn't exactly produce the world's greatest cars. It was only after Mitsu bought out Volvo's stake that the quality got a LOT better. The s40 is a MUCH improved car now.
Ford owns Mazda.
I don't why Ford owning Mazda is relevant to this review?!!
Ford owns volvo is a better statement.
I bought a s40 year 2000,my biggest mistake ever : (
I bought a 2000 Volvo s40 turbo, nothing but problems from the start and parts are way overpriced, never will I buy a Volvo again.
