2005 Volvo XC90 review from North America

"Potentially great sport utility with some growing pains"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Chrome trim around doors and windows discolored.

Rack and pinion steering changed twice within 21000 miles.

Front brakes have been replaced already at less than 21000 miles.

Roof rack rattles even after dealership added extra adhesive to help.

General comments?

This is the first mid-sized luxury sport-ute I've owned. Had Yukon xl's and Suburbans prior to the XC-90. I'm very pleased with the ride and handle although did recognize looseness and rattles in steering column as I entered driveways and businesses so took it to dealer on scheduled visit to have them tell me rack and pinion was bad. Dealership was great about changing it and doing other little things, but I'm starting to get a little annoyed with the 2nd rack and pinion I've had changed in less than 21000 miles along with a whopping unexpected front brake job for $200 in less than 21000 miles. Dealership said this was normal--well, not where I'm from. I've driven lots of nice big sport ute's and that's a first for me at less 35k to 45k miles. I met a gentlemen at dealership same day as he was picking up his 2005 xc-90 that had just had his 1st rack & pinion changed at 29000 miles. I do love the way the vehicle drives and looks, but I bought this for reliability and styling and so far I miss my Yukons. Dealership also told me about the rattling roof rack issue they are starting to have along with the sunroofs leaking in drive through car washes. my car wash even gave me a paper for this particularly on xc-90's. Any comments please respond. Oh yea no place for cell phone to lay.
