1985 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royale from North America - Comments

"A truly amazing vehicle with abundant HP!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

I replaced one of the universal joints.

The transmission is a little choppy. It is burning just a little bit of oil, during the summer I added about 1 quart every 10 days.

The brakes need work, but I'm getting rid of it soon, so I'm not going to fix them.

Weather stripping is rotted out.

Interior lights on the dash work when they feel like it.

Windshield wipers don't shut off.

Window on the driver's side doesn't roll down.

Door on the passenger side doesn't open from the outside.

Shifter knob has broke off.

Driver's seat belt buckle is gone, must use the middle one.

The body has many rust holes and dents.

That's it though, the rest is cake.

General comments?

MY TANK... I love this car, it rides like a dream, I scoff at speed bumps!! It is unbelievably stable at high speeds, I made it up to about 125 or 130mph a few times.

Acceleration is great, I can beat most stock models off the line. I feel like I'm driving a rocket ship when I'm on the highway.

Out of the over 40 cars and trucks I have driven, it was the most comfortable of them all.

Oldsmobile should have kept producing this model identically forever. Wish I could keep it forever.

My to another:

Just a word -

you seem to be having more 'small' annoying problems than myself, or those of anyone I know.

However, I wish I had your engine power 'problems'!!

What axle ratio you have? no way can I believe that it can go over 100.

By the way, can your car peel rubber? Mine canNOT, and I ordered it with a different rear end, one that should allow it to really take off. Then again, my mechanics (as well as Olds (in Arbitration) never could figure out why! Actually, I had a loaner once, with a 6 cylinder. It had more power than mine.

Only problems I have are 1-radiator springs leaks more than it should, 2- intake manifold gasket 2 times already (hey, I do have 210,000 on it) & 3-, mmmm, sure there is something else, just can't remember it. Gas, drinks the stuff. (OK, the cruise control failed, and the car IS rusting).

Arnie, brooklyn, 88 RB with 307.

I do indeed believe that you do not know what you are talking about! Your problem could be two things, you, or the car, and by the way you talk, it seems to be you. If you find out that it isn't, why don't you believe that the car can get over 100 MPH, iv'e done it, and I can peel out (burn rubber) so take a hint, before you open your big mouth, ask a mechanic, like myself if it is possible, and/or if they have done it in a costumer's car!

OK, I myself have an '85 Delta 88. This car has the 307 with the quadrajet four barrel carburetor. Many times I have "peeled out" in it. Its not hard with the pizza cutters that its riding on. However, how can you possibly know that you were doing 120-130mph? The speedometer only goes to 85mph. I'll believe that you broke 100. With the high gearing and tall tires that part is easy. The problem with 120-130 is that it takes my IROC forever to get to 120 (granted it has been driven harder over its life and is probably more worn out) and it has 50 horsepower over the old Olds.

Its OK to be proud of your car, but lets be a little realistic with the fishing stories.

I personally own a 1985 oldsmobile, Delta 88 Royal Brougham, 307 5.0 V8, 2 dr coupe with only 130,000 miles. And I myslef also know for a fact that the car can definitely hit 130, and quickly also. For some reason this car excells at speeds in excess of 70 mph+. My buddy has an old mustang 5.0 which I believe is a 302 V8? Anyway his speedometer goes to 150 and we were side by side on the highway at 135 mph, the car is a rocket at high speeds! No Lie. Go Delta Go!

Ah what a refresher to hear the speeds that my car is able to reach. I actually have a 350 not the 307. it is from an older cutlass however I have never had anyone near me when my needle is long gone to tell me how fast I was going... i knew over 100 but never knew just how much. I also can say that mine has good pickup because me and a few friends would take our cars across a relatively small parking lot. about a fields length and the old boat killed everything, but the porsche 928 but hey she gave him a run for his money. in a longer race I still figured I could win, but we never tried. the race consisted of: 97'dodge dakota in 5th 97' chevy cavalier in 4th 99' chrysler sebring in 3rd 84' Boat of a delta roaring in second, and of course the porsche as previously mentioned. I was interested in where the 92' probe gt would have come in, but he broke a brake line on the way over. in a longer race I thought I would be around fourth, but who knows at 130 I would just about break even with that sebring, maybe even beat it. granted I do not want to beat my car too hard so I try to avoid things like that, but hey she is pretty solid.
