1997 Ford Taurus SE from North America - Comments

"Too much trouble!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

I have had problems with dome light staying on, put a new bulb in and now so far it's fine.

I also have squeaking now and then turning corners, I just slowed down and it's fine. It only happens once or twice in the past year.

The big problem is my "check engine light". The first code was 0401 last year, they put an erg solenoid in. Two weeks later light is on again. I just bought a scanner to read the codes. They should come with the car. Now I get a 0171 and 0174- system too lean and also the 0401 again. Making an appointment to get it fixed. Now I know the codes and reading the comments from this site has helped me greatly.

General comments?

I love this car, it runs great. I get great gas mileage. However I will not buy another Ford product.

You do have to baby this car.

I have a 1997 Ford Taurus, I have to agree it is a nice car to drive, but I have so many problems with it I'm dumping the piece of crap. I had problems with the transmission, brakes, power steering pump, and over heating. It has aluminum heads that are now warped from the over heating, so now it want stop leaking oil. The sad thing is it only has 127,091 miles on it. I will never buy any Ford again as long as I live.

I have a 1998 that I have beat to hell. It has 207000 miles on it and I just wrecked it on a big pile of dirt, going 90. It flew 40 feet, hit on the nose and landed on the side, and it still runs like a champ. I am now looking for one with a bad motor or tranny to put mine in. Love the car, don't know why, and I'm 17 and love to work on cars.

If you don't take care of a car, it's not going to last long. People say how big a piece of crap this car is, because they don't take care of them; they drive 10,000 miles before they change the oil and do stuff like that, and expect them to go 200,000+ miles, but they go 70000-100000 and break down and they wonder why.

I read these comments and wonder how we were always so incredibly lucky with all our Fords. Of course, they do eventually start falling apart. In our last case it was at just over 300,000 miles.
