"Stonking Mondeo basher"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

OK, this is over 6 1/2 years:

Rear exhaust, rear brake, apportioning valve and front paintwork (too thin) all corrected under warranty.

Since then, cambelt tensioner pulley noisy plus all the usual Cavalier traits: weaping water pump, heater panel bulb, outside temp probe & removable Grundig radio panel. Interestingly the replacement bits for many of these known weak points have now lasted years longer than the originals, have Vauxhall modified the designs?

More recently the exhaust again, plus the middle section and just last week the electric aerial finally gave up the ghost despite lots of TLC over the years. Still, £50 to replace rather than the £130 they used to charge!

General comments?

Great car! The engine is one of the last non Ecotec ones with 150bhp and LOADS of torque. You can just cruise so easily in this car but burn it up if the mood takes you. Dropping reps in their new Mondeo's is a speciality.

Handling is a bit (lot?) understeery but nice sticky Yoko's (205/55 series) keep it reasonable.

Fuel economy is very good (38mpg), never broken down and body work is very fit for the mileage. Intend to keep it to 150k...

Burning off Mondeo's? I don't think so. My Mondeo 2.0i is far quicker at the lights than my mate's Cavalier SRi. The Mondeo also handles twice as well and leaves the Cavalier for dead on country lanes. Try one when you replace your Cavalier, you'll be very impressed and because it's a Ford it will last forever.

Get real, he's talking about a 150 bhp 16v SRi, not an 2.0 8v.

What Mondeo puts out 150 bhp, apart from a V6 24v?

Got my 150BHP SRi 16v 3 months ago. Absolute beauty! Surprisingly quick and good handling.

How did you get 38 MPG? You obviously don't drive it how it deserves to be. 28 MPG is a good average for mine.

As for the Mondeo. I agree with the above comment. I would like to see you outperform a 150BHP 16v.

Would recommend one of these to anyone. A bargain for what you pay for them!!

Ford & the words "last forever" should never be used in the same sentence.

A Cav SRi will eat a Mondeo for dinner except maybe the new model 2.0 which also produces 150 brake but surely a heavier car.

Always bought Fords before due to being able to beat the living daylights out of them with no complaints, but since buying a 150bhp Cav SRI I have been seduced. It does`nt handle like my old 2.0 glsi Sierra but that's half the fun.

I have a cavalier turbo, that is running at 280bhp and that would defintly out run a mondeo 2.0l 8v!

I had a 1.6 Mondeo which would out-handle anything with a Cavalier badge on it.

The 2.0 Cavalier is one of the fastest family saloons in a straight line, and one of the biggest dogs of them all in the corners. Even the 4x4's don't handle.

Full (matched) Koni kits sort the handling good and proper.

Just sold my 150 SRI to a very lucky lad in Stoke. A week after buying it my mate bought a Mondeo Si of the same year and its took him 4 years and nearly £4000 to get it to perform anywhere near the Cav, and I could still look at him in the rear view mirror.

Always wanted an Sri, finally got the 150,16v last year. Had a few problems, but overall this car has been a monster. Please don't compare this beast with your woeful Mondeos. I've left some very capable cars standing, many of the tales simply wouldn't be believed. Oh and as for the handling, you've just got to know how to drive!!!

Owned a Cav Sri 16v for a couple of months now and what a wolf in sheeps clothing. L Reg 94, 1 careful lady owner 160k with FSH. It kicked out 167 BHP on the rollers on the weekend and runs very sweet... Mondeo eat your heart out. This car will leaves skid marks on you face.

I have a corsa 5dr gls with no mods to the outside other than a set of wheels and a slight drop to to the uprated suspension. Even the badges are still on saying it's a 1.4. Under the bonnet however I have a cav 150 sri engine. Now that's a wolf in sheeps clothing!

I have a cavalier 16v red top. The engine is a legend! It's been in four of my cavaliers in the last four years. It's got a full magnex exhaust including the four branch manifold, chipped, megaleads, rally cams etc etc. It handles like a dream thanks to spax suspension, it produces 186bhp and does about 152 mph! I've never had the rev limiter in 5th gear and it just pulls forever. at the moment its in my m reg cavalier and I fitted it myself and wired it up in 2 days. Beats any ford! The only place a ford beats a cavalier is on the way to the scrapyard. James The Vallys Commando The road warrior South Wales
