2007 Volkswagen Passat from North America - Comments

"Never again... back to Saab or BMW"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

1. Rattles in dash

2. Poor design - cruise handle and directional lever same size shape - confusing, chrome interior parts - reflection from sun is blinding

3. Engine stumbles and has HUGE turbo lag

4. Tires are noisy and have poor road feel

5. Poor headlights and high beams.

6. Lousy vent locations and adjustability, especially for Phoenix

General comments?

Nice at first glance, but the warts come out fast..

To say that the 2.0T motor in the Passat has turbo lag is to insult true turbo lag, unless your car isn't running well.

The 2.0T has little to no turbo lag, certainly much less than any SAAB. I would know, I have one, and have driven both.

I have to agree with the first comment that something must be wrong with your Passat if it has "HUGE" turbo lag. VW's turbo four was designed not to suffer from turbo lag. This is still a new car, take it back and make them do something about it!!

I agree with the original reviewer. This car suffers badly from turbo lag, but that is minimal problem compared to the other things that had gone wrong on my 2007 Passat. I'm trading it in when the warranty expires.

Any BMW, Saab or Japanese car is far better than this lemon.

The current 1.9/2.0 litre PD diesel engines don't suffer turbo lag. Flatspots and hesitation around 2000 rpm are typically caused by dirty injectors of more commonly by a defective MAF (Mass AirFlow sensor)

Either of the above would be a disgrace on a car under a year old!

What?

I don't know what is this, but I can't believe you are talking about bad engines; this engine is very efficient.

Americans even today have their slow and weak power cars, considering the volume size of the engine.

I work for a vw dealership in PA and see these current passats more than you see your own. the new product line from 2005 and up is phenomenal. if you are experiencing some issues, take it to a well known dealer who can fix it. trust me, cars are machines and can fail us, but its all in who fixes it and how they fix it right the first time, that will keep your trust in the car. I rarely see any newer vw's coming in with any type of major problems, purely maintenance. I hope this might shed light a little for you. I know its frustrating when a car acts up, I help customers all day long, but any issue you have is only temporary and can be resolved quickly. I firmly stand behind the vw brand I work for (how many people really would want to back up who they work for on their own time?)

I have a 2007 Passat, I love the turbo, the speed, the economy, the looks, the leather, this car is an engineering

marvel, envied by Lexus and Bmw. However the problems I encounter are hard down shifting that is in frequent. The tires the upgraded 17s will not hold air and the VW customer service is absolutly Low Down. I have owned six volkswagens because they truly are a drivers car. Ihave to drive either to wooster akron or columbus Ohio to get service which is a major inconvenience, because I live in Central Ohio.

I have one question?

I bought a 2008 Passat 2.0 TDI PD 6 speed manual...

My manual stick makes a noise when shifting... a clicking noise, dealership dosent know what it is. Can someone tell me if they have the same problem.

Overall a great car, I give it a 9.5 out of 10.

I have no problem with trubo lag, it actually has incredible pickup. Turbo works great.

Thanks.

My 2004 Passat 2.0 TDI has 27,000 miles and only a few issues with brake light and heated seat recall and EGR valve malfunction that caused excessive black smoke. Dealer took care of all items. The ride and comfort are great and fit and finish are excellent. Had a 2000 Passat 4 cylinder gasser and it was a lot more trouble with CEL coming on due to emissions. Also has a 2001 Golf diesel that was great on mileage, 50+ highway. I have driven VWs since 1956 and was a VW mechanic for several years and I personally can say the engines and transmissions are far from perfect. Given TLC they will last a long time.

I have a 2003 Saab 9-3 Turbo, I must say that turbo-lag is virtually non-existent.

I have not driven the 2.0 liter Passat, however I did test drive a 1.8 turbo a few years back, and the turbo lag was so bad, I went with a VR6 VW instead.

I liked the VW very much, but absolutely love my Saab.

I'm not sorry that after 10 VW's, I switched to a Saab 9-3.

I also have the hard down-shifting problem. It makes me not want to drive the car in tiptronic mode. If you time it right, you can down-shift just fine until you down-shift from 2nd to 1st gear. When its in automatic, the car will shift to 1st gear with the car rolling, however if you manually shift at that speed, you will get a big knock. I don't know why it does this.

The 2.0T is an EXCEPTIONAL engine. Tell me how many other engines are this powerful, with 200 horsepower, while achieving 34 mpg city? Also very quiet.
