"Still lagging behind in quality and reliability"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

At about 4k miles the engine control unit burned out and it left us stranded on I95 in Deleware for over 5 hours in freezing cold weather in a not so nice area. We called 5 times and each time they said there's nothing they could do, and one operator even hung up on us!

Then we started having problems with the engine and emissions systems, which would cause the vehicle to only go 35 MPH maximum, which was very dangerous on the highway. Second time it needed to be towed away. By the way, we got no loaner vehicle, and Hyundai has the worst customer satisfaction when it comes to warranty coverage, which is a joke.

Later around 7k miles the rear hatch broke and would not open.

At 11k miles my husband noticed a strange noise under the rear seat. The dealer replaced the suspension sway bar bar, which came unbolted.

Again at 14k miles the engine control unit burned out, but this time we were only a few minutes away from home, so we left the car there and had friends pick us up.

Brake rotors have to be replaced often in intervals of 8-10k miles, along with the rotors, due to their low quality materials.

Right now as I am writing this review, the car is in the shop being repaired for various small problems and the reason I am writing this review.

Their service people are rude and they don't like complaints. The waiting room was dirty and filled with people all having their cars fixed for various problems.

General comments?

We traded in our Honda Odyssey minivan for the Veracruz, and we put over 18k miles in 10 short months. Price wise we think it's an OK value if you add no options, but depreciation rates are very bad for Hyundai, and it loses value like a rock. Depreciation eats into any savings you had at first, so you really end up paying MORE than buying a car that was more expensive to begin with.

We take many weekend road trips around the country, and find the Veracruz to be very comfortable for us and our 2 children aged 4 and 7, and the rear seat DVD keeps them busy. The ride is smooth and quiet, and there's plenty of room for luggage and people. The seats fold almost flat, but can be a bit dangerous with the kids finger and toes, and they also don't close slowly. On paper this is a good SUV.

We would never recommend this vehicle or any other Hyundai. Hyundai claims they have improved and try to back this up with a so called great warranty, which we think is a scam. It's also not the best warranty. You cannot transfer it like GM's, and they only cover certain parts like the engine and transmission for 10 years 100k miles. Really, who keeps a Hyundai for that long anyways? Or better yet, who CAN keep a Hyundai that long? The owner ends up selling it at 50k miles and the warranty is voided so Hyundai doesn't have to worry about fixing it.

Also, when they do fix something that is covered under the warranty like the engine control unit, they charge you $400 for an oil change so they get their money anyways. To make things worse, you get NO LOANER CAR like most other manufacturers. Good luck if you have to go to work and a Hyundai is your only vehicle!

We are going to trade this in for a Ford Edge or Buick Enclave. Two SUVs our friends have and love, and never had the problems we had.

Sounds like my 2007 Azera. Hyundai outsourcing to China?

Not to mention gas mileage again but right now I get less than 14 mpg average. Other than that, its the same as yours- an unreliable Hyundai. The more things change the more they stay the same. So much for them working on their image.
