2 years after I bought the car there was a recall on the heater and was taking care of at no cost.
2 years ago the car would not pass emision inspection. So I found a good mechanic and then it finally passed emisions.
At approx 200,000 the Catalytic converter roted out and got replaced.
Twice this has happened to me. First time somebody broke into my car and stole $500 worth of gadgets and the driver side window had to be replaced. The 2nd time somebody broke into my car from the driver side window again and stole the car stereo. So again it needed a driver side window and I had to get a new stereo. Since then nobody broke into my car. To be honest I'm surprised my car was never stolen because I understand Toyota's has always been the most popular cars to be stolen.
My car has died a lot of times because Stupid me keeps forgetting to shut the headlights off, and it's a good thing this is a light weight car with a stick because you can just push start it instead of finding help to get it jump started.
One more thing is that about every week I have to add a quart of oil because now it burns a bit of it.
I have never got the highest gas mileage on this car which is 40 MPG that was stated by Toyota which may be my fault because on the highway I drive much faster than 55, It also may be the way I always shift, I replaced the regular tires to much bigger and better traction tires. The regular tires never handled well at all. It was very scary to drive in the rain and snow. Because of those bad tires I went in a ditch twice and I got stuck in the snow twice and on time in the mud.
The most positive thing about this car has had a bundle of reliability since I bought it brand new. I drove this car from Milbridge, ME to Colorado Springs, CO which was the most distance driving I did with this car and I never had a problem. I had this car for 13 years and it has always got me to where I had to go. I usually get about 325 miles on 1 tank, and I do not mean until I ran out of gas. I usually fill up when there is only like a gallon of gas left. So if I let it run out of gas which I will never do it would maybe get up to 350 miles and its about a 10 gallon gas tank so I mostly get around 37-38MPG which is what most Hybrids get except the Prius.
I have loaded a lot of weight in this car. From $1000 worth of groceries to 1000 pounds worth of luggage for a vacation trip and then then big one. I have moved most of my home in this car when I moved from Kentucky to Kansas City. I have to say This car did great.
I know the 2009 Corolla is made much better. It probably handles much better with regular tires (this car I had to get upgraded tires for better handling). Compared to mine I bet it also has better acceleration because that engine is bigger and I know the horsepower is not under 100 like mine, and its more stylish and I want to get it but the 2009 Corolla is too expensive and even the new Yaris which is smaller starts at what, $14,000?. Meanwhile my car is still going strong at over 13 years old with over 200,000 miles with the original motor and clutch and gets about the same gas mileage as the new Corolla and Yaris.
I agree, my 1994 Corrolla has 235,000 miles and has been super reliable! It has never failed to start, never been on a tow truck, and never let me down!
She's 14 now and been with me and my wife since new - it was our first car when we got married. It's a part of the family! All three of my children have ridden in it from the hospital to home!
I highly reccommend this vehicle to anyone! A FIRST CLASS RELIABLE PRODUCT! Too bad American car makers don't learn from the Toyota Corolla!
