"Nice ride for a southern boy"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Starter went out at about 60,000 miles.

Power steering hose at 70,000 miles.

Brake pads lasted until 100,000 miles.

Bose car stereo not up to par for the money.

Replacef 8 to 10 wheel studs when tires were rotated.

Does not like the fact that the timing belt has to be replaced at 60,000 miles ($600.00 each time).

General comments?

The ride is excellent.

The view is great.

Plenty of room.

Put together well.

The timing belt complaint is a small issue. Spend fifty bucks and get a service manual. It takes you step by step on how to replace, don't forget to change the hydraulic pusher.

My family owns a 1988 Isuzu Trooper II. We have owned it from new. A few years ago we had to replace all the Lug Nuts except for 3 or 4. We also had to replace at least 8 studs, sorry I can't remember the exact number. We found out that this happened because the mechanics used an air wrench instead of using the lug wrench tool supplied with the car. The air wrench hurts the lug nuts because it tightens them too much and screws the studs into the plastic inside the lug-nuts. Then when you take the lugs off the car they may break the studs and then they need to be replaced.

I love my trooper, but I don't think I will buy any car made by Isuzu due to their lack of customer service, can-do attitude and lack of knowledge about their own car. Here is why I said what I said.

I have 1994 Isuzu Trooper with about 100,000 miles on it. I do maintenance regularly. My car won't start one morning while I was in Wilmington, DE, and towed it to the nearest Isuzu Dealer, New Castle Isuzu. It took exactly a month for the dealer technician to diagnose and found nothing. During that time, Dealer told me that they had called Isuzu Central Service Dept. and got help from them (One point, they were asking me to pay extra for that part of service). I also called Isuzu Company and asked for advice and help, but they can't do anything for me, but confirm that their service center is working with the dealer on my car. No backing from the company, as if my only option is to trade in or throw away the car. Finally, the dealer claimed that they can't figure out what wrong with the car and asked me to pay for $400 to part replacement (no labor fees, I do appreciate it).

I then had to tow it back to my home town, Richmond, VA, and cost me another $500. I towed it to my local mechanic and he worked on it for a week and cost me $200, but my car is running again since then. It has been 3 months, and the car is running normally.

So, is it me or the dealer and the Isuzu Company did not try hard enough to fix my car? Again, I love the ride of the car and I enjoy it very much, but my car was nearly headed to the junk yard, thanks to knowledge, or I should say lack of knowledge, of dealer and company. It may be same for the other car company, but I am done with Isuzu after this trooper.

I own a 1994 trooper LS that I purchased new. Starter problems: 1st went out at 60,000 miles, then to 95,000 miles, now at 127,000 I have to have it replaced again.

The transmission went out at 95,000 but I was stuck with the replacement (past warranty).

The power steering hose burst at around 75,000 and I replaced it.

I am the southern boy who bought the 1994 trooper new. i still have the suv. the motor left at 197000 miles, somehow the number 5 piston got a hole in it. I still drove the trooper over 100 miles to get home. I took the advice and bought a repair manuel. I found a motor with 60000 miles on it for $1100.00. I think the motor had more miles on it because I had to REPLACE the rocker arm shafts ($55.00 ea). I also replaced the timming belt (43.00) the next was the transmission ($1800.00 w/lifetime warranty). then there was the heater core (55.00 ea w/a little modification)

a cooling core (85.00 again w/modification). Replaced the radiator (245.00).it took about 6 weeks working on it in the evenings. the trooper now has 247000 miles on it and is going strong I hope to drive another ten years. doing the work myself was time consuming, but well worth it. the four wheel drive has been very strong going through the congaree swamps and dove fields.
