The check engine light stayed on and had to be reset.

Go ahead, I recently purchased a Sonata and went over it with a fine toothcomb since I have sold Jaguars and Saabs for 27 years. This car is built as well as anything I've ever seen considering its price. It's bodyseams are even and well alligned. It is quieter and more comfortable than the S-Type and the Saab (I also own a 9-3 Saab). It also has more room (except for Saab's trunk). This company (Hyundai) has come a long way in a short time and is now building some excellent cars. Sure some still joke at me, but I remind them that not so long ago that this was the case with Japanese cars too! (or Jaguar for a matter of fact) and nobody laughs at them anymore!
I have had a Sonata for two years now and am changing it for the 2001 model in June. I drive in Norway which has roads that go straight up or straight down. Have never in my 45+ years of motoring felt safer. Great comfort, great auto gear and well thought out design. Highly recommended.
