"Does what it's asked most of the time"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The harmonic balancer broke (they all go), the coilpack went (replace yours if it's still original), the auto transmission is rough as guts, the fan won't work below setting 3, noisy valvetrain despite strict oil changes, the paint fades (on most VNs it does, keep them garaged), the driver seat height control is loose.

Things like the door trim fasteners (on the inside of the trim) and bargain basement crap. Holden saves money on these things you don't see in the showroom and when you try and service it, they break. False economy, though not their problem! Thanks guys.

General comments?

Other than that long list it's not that bad a car.

This year I made one of the biggest mistakes of my life by trading in my VN Commodore for a Hilux 4x4 diesel.

If I ever the the chance I will get back into a Commodore, it was the best car I have ever owned.

Not only did you have heaps of power, you also had fuel economy to go with it. I could get around 9-10 litres per 100 km.

In the four years I owned it, all that needed replacing was the fuel pump, new bearings in the alternater and a new knock sensor. Other than that I would recommend this car to anyone.

Hey mate. I had exactly the same problems with my VN as yours. The fan thing is caused by a faulty coil box inside the engine bay, common problem. Theres a coil box for setting 1&2 and a separate one for setting 3&4. It cost me $4 for a new one and the wrecker at Littlehampton installed it for free. As for the transmission they are fussy over what brand AT fluid you use, and don't like mixes. Also don't forget to flush the cooling pipes when you change your AT fluid. Still it's a fairly rough car aside from the transmission, i.e. engine noise, bits falling off etc. but they are a very relliable car. Luke luka_m@bigpond.net.au.
