Front brakes oil leak at 120.000 km, front brakes replaced.
Same with rear brakes recently at 130.000 km.
On top of the fairly primitive heating system , the air-fan broke down at 100.000 km. Fan was replaced, but very noisy (birdnoises and more!) since then.
I do like this car's powerful 1.4 single-point injection engine a lot. Although it's not very sporty it renders enough power in all traffic situations and seems to be very reliable.
Being one of the last R5 cars manufactured, the cabin and dashboard options are not very elaborated or nice.
It's a pity that in the 'Campus' and 'Five' models the earlier dashboard design (as found on 80's R5 types) was abandoned for a sparser type, identical to that of the Renault Express vans.
Despite their shaggy 'R4-ish' looks the front seats are very confortable.
We're June 2002 now, and more than one year later, and 20.000 Kilometers older (at a total of 150.000) kilometers my little white Five is still going strong!
Some things to add: In September 2001 I had to replace a big part of the exhaust pipe, and more recently in March 2002 I had to replace both front seats. I guess these are normal things for a car this age.
So I am still very happy with my Renault 5 Five 1.4. The engine is excellent, no trouble with it at all!
I wonder If the newer types Renaults (Clio's and Twingo's) are as good as my model.
Same as above comments.
I would like to add that, my Renault five is still working very well. The engine after 170 000km is working as new, perhaps even better... The only glitch would be the rust on the car's body.
January 2004 now: my R 5 five is still on the road for daily use.
I've done 175.000 Km's now.
This week a major thing happened: my clutch broke down.
Had it replaced and now the car's completely OK again. Driving has become more comfortable since this new clutch has a slightly lighter feel on the pedal.
Engine is still doing OK. In my garage my mechanic told me they have (had) several Renault Five's (petrol engines) who've easily made it to 300.000 KM Only problem is the rust. Around the rear windows and under the windshield my 5 starts to show some signs of corrosion too.
Driver seat was replaced at 160.000 Km too.
I have recently bought a Renault 5 Campus Prima, and it makes the whistling sound that others have commented on - a fault of the engine management computer. Other than this I find it very enjoyable to drive, very nippy around town, and enough power for the motorway with its low kerb-weight and 1.4 engine. I wish the windscreen wiper had an intermittent option though, and the heater is ridiculously noisy. A clock, rev counter and cigarette lighter would be nice too...
My 5 was purchased from new in 1994 it has never let me down and has done 108,000 miles. Regular servicing seems to be the secret. I have replaced the clutch at 80,000 miles and the heater fan motor. Various items brakes, exhaust, gaiters have been replaced as required. I find it a very reliable car, starts every time, keeps me dry and goes from A to B cheaply. What more could you ask of a cheap car?
Bought my Campus Prima as my first car in Jan 2007. Since then this the car has been great! I have fitted central locking, a boot pop and other various gadgets!
Under the bonnet, the car seems to be fine! But there is the common problem of the noisy heater motor! I believe this is due to the motor becoming seized in cold and wet weathers. There's no rust on this 14 year old car, and what rust there was, was quickly coated in hammerright. I'm having some other modifications done; I'll keep you posted.
I have just inherited a 1992 Renault 5 Auto. Very low mileage (33,000 genuine) but within a couple of weeks the coolant bottle filled with a brown foam type of substance. Investigation showed it to be Auto Transmission Fluid getting into the coolant and causing contamination. Trouble is I can't understand how it is getting there. Has anyone any suggestions?

Still be working O.K. after 21 years.
Mine is running better than new; 73,000 no major work. I added bits and Bob's, too. The rad from the 1.4 turbo does the campus a treat, and also re-setting up air intake improves motorway driving and no the clio or twingo don't go as well as this.
PS the person who done remote locking could you please tell me how you done it and what kit used planning that next cheers.
