Transmission went out at 120 miles.
Engine has no power.
The transmission started lurching through 2nd gear at 400 miles. Its been taken to the dealer three times with no problem found. I had a 4 cyl engine in the vehicle I owned before this and it pulled better and ran stronger. You would think that a engine that's getting almost 10 miles to the gallon should at least have some balls.
WARNING: PAY THE EXTRA COUPLE THOUSAND DOLLARS FOR A COMPETING MANUFACTURERS TRUCK. It will save you tons of time and a lot of money in the long run.
I own a 2001 Quad Cab and love it. No problems at all. Mine is a 4x4 with a 360 auto, it pulls my 20ft boat with a big block no problem.
I also have a 2001 Ram 1500 with the 5.3L engine. My truck doesn't have any power either. I can't even spin the wheels. I took it back to the dealer and they hooked it up to the computer and found no problems. It seems to miss sometimes and idle rough at cold start up. If you were able to get your problem fixed please let me know at ffmix30@aol.com. I would like to know what the problem was and maybe it will help me get mine fixed.
My truck transmission has gone out at 32000 miles. SLT 1500 with 318 engine 2 wheel drive. It also doesn't have any power. Transmission always has been rough in and out of passing gear etc. Dealer said it was just that way. Great ride, great comfort inside.
I love the way it drives and rides, but I can't use the cruise because of the passing gear shifting in and out on any little incline.
One other thing, the engine compartment has gotten extremely dirty and I can't figure out why. Very seldom on a dirt road. My daughter's Celica engine with 160,000 miles looks twice as clean. Same goes with my Chevy truck with 200,000 miles. It was cleaner also.
I just purchased a 2002 Ram. Looks really good, but runs very badly. The transmission slams into gear, the starter hesitates when starting, it idles rough, and sometimes dies at red lights. Took it to the shop twice now, they can find nothing, the maintenance bill simply states "can't reproduce condition at this time". I am very disappointed and will NEVER buy another Dodge product.
I just bought a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 4X2 and it too idles roughs. It does not even have 3000 miles and seems to do it on a cold engine.
I am having problems with my 2001 Ram 1500 also. Reading all of the other comments sounds like I wrote them myself. It runs very rough at cold crank and if I am in a rush and take off immediately the truck doesn't run right all day. If I let it warm up for about 30 seconds and work through its rough running it runs pretty well after that, but still seems not to have the power it should. My dads 318 in his 74 Dodge with 200,000 miles could out pull this new truck with 7000 miles on it. Any help from any of you would be much appreciated e-mail ah1plt@comcast.net.
I have a 2001 SLT 4x4 with the 5.9 engine. One day it runs like a champ then the very next morning I feel like it would have more power if I got out and pushed. To be that dramatic of a change it has to be in the computer. Now with 38000 miles on it my tranny is giving me grief. It won't kick all the way down to first when I slow or stop... Makes it feel like its slipping till I drop the selector down to first then it kicks in. Anyone else have this problem? Sounds like a big repair bill to me now that my warranty expired just a while ago.
02/10/03 - I own a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT, with the 318 in it. It seemed not to have the power it should have, so I added dual Dynomax exhaust to it. It seemed to increase the power, and gas mileage. Only problem is now with 69,450 miles on it, the transmission went out.
Other than the transmission problem I have no complaint with it. I think that all the owners of a Dodge Ram, needs to get together and make Dodge recall this transmission, and replace it. At no cost to the consumers! "I don't know if we're consumers or idiots"
I have the same exact problem as what was posted earlier
"It won't kick all the way down to first when I slow or stop... Makes it feel like its slipping till I drop the selector down to first then it kicks in." Anyone else have this problem? What was the cause? Did it require an overhaul? What did the repair cost? Please let me know!!! Jason.Hans@Nav-International.com.
Now I'm scared by reading all of your comments. At 39,000 miles my 20001 Ram 1500 Laramie got a loud whining noise whenever you would step on the gas. After 3 days of dealing with it, it was determined to be low on transmission fluid, and about 2 driving hours later the noise went away after adding the fluid. However, after reading all these comments, I wonder, will it stay working or not? Also, this truck, if in cruise control mode, revs so high on a hill you think the truck is going to soon fly into the atmosphere. On a straight flat highway it is awesomely comfortable, roomy, and soothing to drive. Would like to hear more about people's transmission problems, as this is my first encounter, however I have never heard the following words spoken "I had my transmission fixed the first time and it has been fine since." I want to know if I am in for a ride and this is just an initial indication of the forthcoming problems. I also found out through this experience that if you have purchased an extended warranty you better read it top to bottom. If you have not performed ALL the required maintenance, and have the receipts to prove it, then they can void the warranty, along with a bevy of other reasons (the small print gives them lots of opportunity) Also if you are operating a home business and need work on your vehicle, they can void the warranty for that too. It's really a racket, a way to get you to pay for something you will never be able to use.

I have a 2000 Ram with the off road package. At 54,000 miles the 5.9 lost oil pressure and resulted in a $4,500 long block replacement. The catalytic converter, brake master cylinder and power booster and rear wheel sensors were replaced at 49,000 miles. The air conditioning compressor, condenser and related parts failed at 48,000 miles. This is a good looking truck with nice options, but it has been a totally unreliable money pit. The average gas mileage is 13mpg. If you like hanging out at dealers service centers this the vehicle for you.
I just recently purchased a 2001 Dodge Ram 4x4 5.9 Liter V-8 with 44,000 miles. One of the Conditions of Sale was to get the overdrive button to work, when the dealer went in to fix the problem, they found that the entire Transmission had to be rebuilt. I am just glad that this was covered by the dealer. I have driven my truck for only 2 days and it has spent over 3 1/2 weeks at the dealer. It appears that this is going to be the start of a terrible relationship.
I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500. It has begun to shut down when we are just driving along. The engine quits and then if it cranks back up it won't idle. The gages read crazy things such as "no bus" and the airbag light and fuel light come on. We have had it in the shop 7 times and they have hooked it up to computer after computer and can find nothing wrong with it. Someone suggested the wiring harness was bad. Please let me know if you have any information that would help us!
My 2001 Dodge Ram 5.9 is doing the exact same thing as far as the airbag, check engine and gas lights coming on as well as the "NO BUS" on the odometer. Luckily, it didn't die on me. I'm not driving it anywhere today and straight to the dealership tomorrow. It's under warranty still and the guy seemed to know what the problem was. Hopefully I will at least make it to the dealership tomorrow!
I went to a search engine and typed in "dodge ram no bus" and found out this is happening a lot. Quite a few Dodge owners are experiencing this problem. Keep in mind, it was just in the shop 3 weeks ago for the tabs breaking off the calipers. This does not look good, especially since the truck only has 19,000 miles on it! I'm starting to doubt Dodge.
I have a 2001 Dodge ram 1500 3.9l 5-speed work truck. Bought the truck brand new and at about 12000 miles the power steering pump blew up, and the fan clutch went out. At about 20000 miles my U-joint went out and it went bad again about 5000 mile later. The pulley tensioner went bad a little later. I purchased an extended warranty when I had bought the truck. That was a $2000 dollar joke. When my transmission went out at 50000 miles they refused to cover it. I replaced the transmission and at 60000 miles my front wheel bearings went out. The truck now has 70000 miles and I am about to put my fourth set of brakes on the truck.
My dad has a 98 Ram 2500 4X4 he bought new. 140000 miles later he has put 4 transmissions, 1 transfer case rebuilt the front end and now the engine needs rebuilt. When his transmissions went out all the lights on the instrument panel lit up.
