After 5 years the radiator rusted out and had to be replaced, but probably because I live in a highly snowy area with lots of salt on the roads. The brakes had to be done at about 100K miles. I just had the timing belt and others replaced at 110K.
Great car. I don't know about the newer years but this 92 has served me very well at a very good price. I get about 38 mpg highway, plenty of room, zip, and comfort. I suggest it highly.
I bought my 1992 Mazda Protege new and it is the best car I have ever owned.
The only repair is the boot sleeve.
I have 96,000 kilometres and am about to replace the timing belt.
Hey you Mazda Protege owners! I have had my 1991 Protege DX for 6 years. I have done some performance modifications, like 2.25" exhaust, low restriction resonator, Dynomax hi-flo muffler, K&N filter charger, Jacobs Electronics 8.5mm ingition wires (plug gap now: 80 thousands!)... Runs like a top, Owes Me Nothing! Goes like crazy, gets 43-48 mpg consistantly.
I have also consistantly changed oil evry 1-2 months. (after I met one with 750,000 Kilometers on it!!, this was the trick.)
So, if you or someone you know is thinking about a great, simple, little econobox... This Is The one! BUT!, have fun trying to find a good specimen,,, GOOD LUCK, but then, if you do, have it professionally checked out, and then, if it is okay... BUY IT! If you wish more info. reach me at :

My 1992 Mazda Protege DX was my first car, I got it a year ago from my cousin in Baltimore Maryland. I live in North Carolina, So I had to drive it there I've only had it a year and 3 months. It had 125k miles when I got it and now it has 190k miles. I'm really proud of it. I recently put some 17 in rims on it and now it looks even better. I need to get my wheel bearings in the back redone, but other than that I love my car. To anyone who is thinking of getting rid of a good protege, think again.
