2000 Peugeot 206 GLX from UK and Ireland - Comments

Power steering pump noisy, making a grinding sound normally associated with cars half-way through their lives.

Engine managment failures abounded, revs soaring at junctions (fortunately), complete loss of power on other occasions. Fixed partially by the dealer.

Starting difficulties experienced. Dealer suggested applying 'a bit of throttle'. Fuel injection systems appropriate fuel/air ratios according to conditions - have built-in automated fire-up procedure.

Suspension developed a rattle at three thousand miles ('that's what happens'). Friend discovered loose anti-roll bars.

By then it had all been too much. My previous Fiat had lasted five years with less hassle.

Comfortable.

Car handles and performs quite well.

The dealers are money-grabbing, offering very poor levels of service, telling non-truths or covering up as far as possible.

Complete complacency within and amongst.

Reliability shabby.

Numerous faults, unacceptable of a most definitely professionally engineered world consumer product.

Reform needed.

I was glad in a way that someone else had problems with their 206, mine is 9 months old and here is a list of faults I've had:

1. The ECU (Electronic Control Unit) and transponder were faulty, causing the car to stop, I rang Peugeot Assist they came and gave me a replacement car, while mine was being repaired, it was away for a total of 5 weeks and 1 day.

2. The shocks were leaking and had to be replaced.

3. One of the engine mountings was faulty and had to be replaced.

4. My husband was washing the car and a large part of the paint work fell off - approx. 6 inches long and 3 inches wide.

5. The window in the front passenger door needs a new regulator.

6. There is a loud squeaking noise coming from the front wheel on the drivers side. I had a 1991 Ford Fiesta before this and I never had any trouble with it.

My sincere sympathy, I unfortunately bought one too. A word of warning to anyone reading this, they're a sexy little car, but just not worth the hassle.

Specially the Paint work, I have never had a car that can be dented/scratched so easily...

Just admire other people with 206s... not worth the hassle.

Incredibly unreliable - 14 warranty claims in 15 months! Dealership incompetent and caused more damage than they resolved. Customer service - they couldn't care less.

The 206 might look good but the hassle is not worth it. Stay away.

My 3rd hand 206 has been great! 50K on the clock and not a drop of oil burnt.

I have driven it in UK, Holland, Ireland (where it lives with me now) and my only complaint was a destroyed Hi Fi system which I replaced with an Alpine. I have moved all my belongings everywhere in it and it is great!

I m Wieslaw, Poland. I rather can t complain my 206. I have it over a year and didn t have any serious problems. Sometimes the engine doesn t start at once but I think it s a matter of immobiliser or chip in a key. I ll go to the service to check.

Across the globe in NZ and I can confirm that my 206 is a pile of shyte as well. Have actually driven the 306 courtesy car more often due to a steady string of electrical and interior fitment problems, will not bother with Peugeot again.

It's a nice car when nothing's wrong, but I have also had my fair share of problems in just one year. I've currently got a power steering leak, and in the time it's taken to get it booked in to be fixed it's completely failed. I refilled it to last until then and it started making horrible noises.

The passenger seat also managed to jam forward, and the stupid placement of the washer bottle resulted in that being holed when I caught a rock.

Summary: A nice car if you get lucky, but can be a nuisance.

I don't know what are you talking about when you say the Peugeot 206 is a bad car, I think they're liars. I have one for 3 years and it is just perfect, everything is going good, and the service is one of the best in UK. I only say to these people STOP THE LIE.

Yes, but regarding the comment above, you have to appreciate that some peoples experiences of 206's are not as good as yours. You can't say they are all liars!

My Peugeot 206 is four years old and has never had any problems until one day when suddenly it just wouldn't start! I had to get it towed to Peugeot who told me it was the Built-in Systems Interface (BSI) that was faulty, needed replaced and would cost £400 in total, including labour. When I went to collect my car, they said it wasn't ready and was now going to cost £800 because the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) also needed replaced. Then, the part didn't get delivered on time so I am still waiting! I am absolutely furious and would strongly advise AGAINST getting a Peugeot!

I totally agree with most of these comments.

In five years, I have had the following problems

Both suspension arms replaced

Both front shock absorbers replaced

Radiator replaced

Clutch and pressure plate replaced because trust bearing follower broke off

idling sensor replaced

anti-rolling bar links replaced 2 times

worst of all, at 18,000 kms the brake pedal pivot broke off and nearly cost me my life

serpentine belt and tensioner replaced 15 times.

I can tell you that this is not only my experience with the 1.9Diesel model having an A/C. Actually most owners, got rid of their cars, and most rental companies have changed their fleet.

SURELY NEVER AGAIN!!!

I own 2 206's (a 1.1 LX 8v and a 2.0i GTI 180 16v). My mum has a 206 (1.4 LX 8v), my grandad has a 206 (1.1 Look 8v), and at one point my 4 best mates all had 206's (1.1 8v, 1.1 LX 8v, 1.6 GLX 8v, 1.6 SE 16v, that's almost all models of 206's between us, and not one of us have ever had major problems.

I can understand that there are a few bad apples out there, but to say to people never go near a 206 is ridiculous. My brother is old enough to drive now, and he wants a 206. I would recommend the 206 to anyone great mileage, good space and a huge range of models.

My poor 1.1 has been driven really hard as it was my first car and I was 18. I really pushed the 60bhp engine past its limits. Still runs fine, considering I couldn't afford to service it. Bought it at 20k miles and I didn't service it until 58k; that's almost triple mileage with no oil change or oil/air/polly filter changes... All it's had done is replacement disks, pads and tyres.

I will be honest and admit one problem with car; the air con packed up, and when I took it to the dealer they said it was £400; they told me it was because I never used the air con (let's face it, it is Britain). I told them I couldn't afford it, so they agreed that they would pay half and I would pay half, and they had it fixed and back to me in no time. They did gave me advice and told me to run the air con a few times a week only for a minute to keep it from happening again. I have found out that air con in all cars, any make or model, should be used on a regular basis. So the fault isn't even a specific Peugeot fault.

I feel sorry for people who have had a bad experience with a 206, and have no idea what other Peugeot models (307s, 207s etc) are like, but I have no regret and would recommend you to buy a 206. In the UK it is one of the most popular cars around. When I'm driving along there is always one in front of me, behind me or parked up somewhere. Gives you a nice feeling that you're not the only one.
