1987 Chevrolet Cavalier Z-24 CL from North America - Comments

"A sub-compact capable of retaining performance and reliability"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The digital instrument cluster does not illuminate when I flick the parking lights to on.

Sometimes the power door locks do not engage.

The oil pressure gauge is erratic when the engine is running.

General comments?

Overall the Z24 has been a fun and reliable car.

I love the V6 fuel injected engine and the simplicity of the 5-speed transmission.

I have since restored this Z-24 to showroom new levels and expect to get another 218,000 miles out of it.

The 1987 model year just feels faster, more solid and more exciting than the current models that Chevrolet has to offer for the Cavalier lineup.

Hi.

I noticed that you mentioned that your Z-24 had a manual transmission. So does mine. I bought it new in the summer of '87. So far the car has been very reliable, but I do dislike the transmission. At 65 000 kilometers the pressure plate got broken through. I had to holler a lot to finally get GM to pay 50% of the costs. Appears to have been a design flaw of the said part. Otherwise, 30% of the time it's a bit difficult to put into first gear. Have you had similar problems? The instrument panel works A-1 but some of the LED (?) segments are showing signs of fading (aren't as bright as used to be). My Z-24 has about 145 000 km. I've had it rustproofed every year and it still looks great and with no rust.

I think the Z-24 is an awesome car. I have had my 1987 for about a year now and I love it. We have hardly had any problems with it. I would like to know more about the LED light problems in the dash if you don't mind.

The problem with the digital dash going out when the lights are on is caused by a bad connection. If this happens to you, remove the digital cluster and carefully clean the electrical contacts on the back. Then re-install it. The unusual electrical connection on the back of the cluster has a tendency to corrode over time. Touching the contacts with your fingers will cause more corrosion and make the problem worse. Carefully cleaning the contacts will fix this problem.

I have had my 1987 Z24 since May of 1987, and hit 300,000 km last month. I have had very few problems, but not to surprisingly, I have experienced every problem everyone has mentioned. I have learned to live with the dash lights going off, but will consider removing the cluster and cleaning the points. The only time my clutch does not stick going into 1st is for a few months after its replaced - which I have done 4 times over the years. All in all, for its age the car is great.

I do have a new problem, the engine stalls and kick starts while drive. I have not been able to determine the reason and it is becoming a safety concern.
