1978 Holden HZ Kingswood SL from Australia and New Zealand - Comments

"Don't touch one with a 10 foot pole"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Everything has fallen off, blown up and rusted to bits.

Performance is pathetic, it goes nowhere when you stomp on the gas.

General comments?

The car is basically falling apart because it is such a rustbucket piece of crap. I would avoid buying a HZ at all costs.

I have had a Kingswood SL for almost 12 months and have not had a problem with it yet. It has never let me down, and performance wise, it can round up a VK commodore going up hill doing about 140 km/h. It is an auto with a 202 engine in it. I wouldn't swap it for the world!!!

You can have your opinion, but have you ever thought that the KINGSWOOD SL you have had experience with might have been a lemon and not a true traditional, reliable KINGSWOOD SL!!!

HZ Kingswood SL, a snot bucket?!

Well I have heard it all.

My first car was, and still is a HZ Kingswood SL, the old 253 is tireless, it corners like a demon and still manages to turn heads after 5 years of perpetual thrashing.

The Kingswood is as strong as any, sits better than most, and is the corner stone of any Aussie religion that embraced Desert Boots, flanelette shirts, and the greatest icon of all, the mullet hair cut.

Kingswood is STRONG

HZ is STRONGER.

I have had a HZ Monaro for 14 years and I have not been left stranded at any time on the road or in the shed. I have found all Holdens to be reliable, not that I have found other cars insuperior, it's just maintenance is the key to better motoring but I will always choose Holdens first.

Regards,

Allcock.

If the car has lasted 23 years and 800000km, then I think it deserves a bloody medal. Even 500000km is a good life.. 300000km in a year? Work it out... You would be driving 825km per day, 7 day per week for a year.

I really don't think you're on your purch!!!

I have had a HZ premier for about 12 months & there has been nothing wrong with it.

My HZ is in immaculate condition with a 4.2 litre V8 and it turns heads where ever I go. If you can do 300000km in 1 year, don't you think your car is reliable?

My parents bought their Kingswood 14 years ago and since then have replaced both ball joints, overhauled the automatic transmission twice and added power steering for my mum. The car has traveled from Brisbane to Broome and back, from Broome to Perth and back again, from Brisbane to Canberra and Sydney and back. It has lived with us near the beach, near the snow and has been parked everywhere in between. It has no rust and is very reliable. It is huge inside and after 14 years my parents are still in love with their car, mum wants to be buried in it!

I have had as my first car a HQ 202wagon. Then a XD falcon and then a VK 5.0ltr commodore. I now own a 78 HZ wagon. Amazing how we always return to the old faithful cars.

Well I bought my Kingswood 17 years ago as a second hand car and in that time it has not a single problem apart from the usual wear and tear. Looks like the one you bought was in fact a lemon (or perhaps the driver doesn't know how to look after it?)

come on mate, I've had my 'Wood' for years now and it has had a few problems recently, but it's 24 years old, I think it's entitled to cost you a bit of money. People like you make me sick, you obviously don't appreciate Aussie icons. If you like picking on faults in cars, stick to fords, now there's a piece of crap. Lay off alright, the Kingswood's a ripper!

Hello fellow, and female lovers of the HOLDEN, I have had my beautiful Premier 1979 for 17 years now. It has been a perfect car. I put a reconditioned 6 cylinder motor in it, in 1990, after it got pinched, and the rotten people that pinched it, ruined the original motor. All the emission controls are back in place, and I put extractors on it, so I wouldn't keep rocking at the lights. You know they are a bit temperamental. I love my car, and wouldn't swap it for anything else. And to add fire to the car, I am a Blonde HA! HA! HA! Have a good one Val...

As my first car I had a WB Ute '84. I had to put a second hand Blue 202 in when I got it. It was a manual 3 speed on the column. It would have been a good car, but first I hit a tree. Replaced the front end with a HZ. Driving in the country I got it up to 190km/h (as a P plater). I later managed to scrap it against a cliff then short out the battery and set the clutch on fire. I then got a HZ Premier with a Red 202 Trimatic. Being an auto I wasn't a real favourite of it. But I got used to it. It was easy to smoke up and get to 160km/h, but that lasted about a month and ended up in the back of a semi-trailer rig at 80km/h. Boy does that hurt. I now got a 4 cylinder corolla. I'm now rebuilding my WB from scratch and looking at putting in a 253ci motor. Because nothing beats a good old Holden with V8 Grunt!

OK, Kingswoods=rock. I got my first Kingy when I was 15, a '75 HJ in MINT original condition. "Josephine" or Josie I called her. Learned to drive in it, and thank the good Lord for that every day! Dragging rev-heads in their commodores and falcons at the lights and the ol' faithful 253 kicking their rear ends!

One sad day it was written off by a %*^&#$^% Subaru liberty, and I regret NOTHING in my life except for NOT buying it back off the NRMA for parts! I now have an HZ (78) wagon, she's got 460,000 kms on the 202 and still goin' strong! I'm currently in the process wasting money on her.. I mean.. doing her up... hehehe, and wouldn't trade her for the world!

Seats down, mattress in the back, I have a bedroom wherever I go. AND she turns heads, getting me plenty of attention from boys;) (and girls actually).

I understand the whole temperamental thing, but really, you (original post) just didn't give the poor old thing a chance! You have to understand the kingy's, and they're loyal forever!

Rock on fellow Kingswood lovers!!

Gees, no wonder your kingswood fell apart! Please keep in mind that it's done 300,000 kms in a YEAR!!! And altogether accumulated 800,000km!!! Try getting a new car to do that!!

(especially once it's almost 30 years old!!!)

The old HQ-WB holdens are fantastic. And I know that. My dad has two HZ Statesmans and a HZ One-tonner.

One of the statesmans we started the other day after not using it for 5 years! And once we got the oil pump to kick in again (pumped it up with vaseline) she ran BEAUTIFULLY.

And the one tonner's origninal motor is due for it's second rebuild after blowing the no. 1 cylinder. But it's done almost 560,000 kms. And I'm not saying it's a heap of junk either, It's done fantasticly to last 23 years since the last rebuild.

I have nothing, but praise for the old Hq-WB Holdens. Straight six or V8. And I'm looking at getting a 202 One tonner for my first car.
