The alternator had to be replaced which was a real trick to do.
The ball joints lost their lubrication and had to be replaced.
Occasionally, this car doesn't turn when I turn the key. I can hear something click and everything electrical comes on as normal, but it doesn't turn?? After a minute or two of constant turning, it starts. This happens, maybe, once every 3 months.
Lately it hesitates when I give it gas and then I get a thrust of power. I'm in the process of figuring this one out.
Other than the small headaches, I love this car. I haven't added a thing to its appearance and it turns heads all the time. Often people are shocked to find out that it's a 1994 and not newer.
The power is excellent. Sometimes I unintentionally squeal the tires when I turn corners or accelerate.
The power sunroof does take away head room.
A definite quality vehicle.
The hesitation when you give it gas & then the sudden power sounds like your transmission is slipping.
I had a weird electrical problem on mine, too. After about 3-4 yrs of troubleshooting, replacing parts, switches and sensors, we discovered that a connector outside the fuse box was melted. You might try that to see if you have the same problem.
I have a second hand 1993 grand prix which I just bought recently in an auction. it was running well at first then I brought it to a car wash to have it cleaned, but when I came back to get it it wouldn't run anymore. It's running right now, but very poorly. I have to force it to make it run. the engine is noisy. the fans are not working and the SES light is lit. there are times, very rarely, SES light turns off and the car will run smoothly and so will all the fans and aircon, but when you turn it off and use it the next day, its the same problem all over again. I'm very frustrated already...I'm hoping someone has an idea of what's going on with my car... help needed...ms jet.
I bought a used 1998 Grand Pr ix GT two years ago. In that time, I have bought new brakes, new water pump, new alternator, two or three new sensors not to mention that I am having a problem with the car spontaneously hard-shifting and the tacometer stops reading. I hate this car. I'll never buy another Pontiac. The one I have has dollar-ed me to death.
I have a 97 Grand Prix SE with a 3.8 V6 and its been a good car, but I'm having an electrical problem. I was wondering if any one has had the same problem. When I put the blower motor on low or medium speed my day time running lights go off and I have to operate the headlights manually.
My 97 grand Prix SE is an electrical nightmare I will never again buy a pontiac. The key won't come out without manual override. The shifter won't come out of park without manual overide. When the wiper blades are on it kicks out of cruise control. The radio volume is intermittent. The engine electrical system gets weak then shuts the car down with a fully charged battery, not allowing a restart without a jump, then everything works fine for about a week. The fuel gauge does not operate correctly under a quarter tank, it jumps back to full. The right electric window is intermittent. The only excitement Pontiac brings is not knowing if you will get there or not!
As far as the Service Engine Soon and the rough running, you may have a short in the ECU (computer), which controls the idle, fuel-air mixture etc.. My friend has a 95 GTP and experienced the same problem. Worst of all, they aren't cheap, but that's probably whats wrong.
I have the same problem with it cutting out. When I changed the spark plugs and the wires, I found build up on the dist. terminals. After cleaning and replacing plugs and wires it worked great.
The clicking starter thing could be your solenoid, My Z34 had that problem and it was that. The idling problem when cold is probably your intake manifold gaskets, I replaced those and it fixed my sputter/surge and cold idle problem. I'd also suggest changing the timing belt atleast every 50K miles. Just suggestions, good luck with your car.
I have a 94 Grand Prix Se, and I also have problems starting it. I thought because I put an automatic starter in it was the problem. I turn the key, and it only clicks. If I take the key out and turn it again, it starts, but after turning the key a few times. Also, if I start the car, and press on the gas while it's in park, and then shift to drive, my car gets confused likes it's in Neutral. It won't go forward or back. I have to shut the car off & restart. My Engine light is also on, and I have replaced both brakes 2 times in 1 year. I also had to get the struts re-done, and my left front tire fell off. The CV joint & ball join went bad. Aside from all that, I love the car... it just requires matienced. It has 189,000 miles.
I have a 1995 pontiac grand prix I have put a new thermostat in it and had an oil change in it a month ago and got told that when they changed the oil they over filled it I took it back to the place that I had it done, but they won't do anything about it now my car is over heating and lifters are making a noise how can you tell if a water pump needs to be replaced.
I have a quick question, I have a 95 grand prix and for the life of me I cannot get this car out of park, does anyone know if there is an override switch to get this car out of park, or anything else I can do, thanks.
Hey there, I was wondering if it is possible to maybe fit a small block V-8 into a 1996 Grand Prix GTP, most likely a 350 of sorts?
Any information would be appreciated.
I too have a 95 Grand Prix and I had the same problem with the engine getting stuck in park. I was told that there is a switch in the column that has to be replaced for the shifter to work properly. either that or maybe it is a fuse.. either way I actually took a hammer.. yes a hammer, and gave it a good hit and since then it don't get stuck no more..
I have a 1994 Pontiac grand prix SE 2-door.
The reason that the motor won't turn over when you stick the key in originally is because the lil resistor in the key itsself is not lined up right, and thus causing the car to believe it is a "phony" key, and won't turn over.
To fix this problem, you need to replace the starter and get a new set of keys made.
I had this problem on my car, and since replacing the starter and the keys, it has completely gone away.
The transmission slipping is an unusual thing, I had the same problem, replaced the tranny, and it still does it, but not as frequently. (i replaced it with a rebuilt tranny)
Hope this helps!
I love my grand prix, and she is an amazing car that runs great, and looks awesome!
