Needed new tires.
Passenger side handle came off while trying to close it.
Needed a new distributer which had rusted up.
Mass oxygen sensor needed replacing.
Oil sender unit needed replacing.
A part where the hot water runs through for the heater leaks.
Seat belt needed fixing... adjusting is more like it. Something go stuck on it.
NO power in a 2.8 liter. DON'T ever get one! Actually, I've heard that they get about 24 mpg, and they are great. But that was a case where she bought the car from a guy who took great care of it. She loved that car a lot. I however bought my car off some kid who didn't have a clue about how to jury-rig.
I get 19 on the highway.
I'm not getting too much power out of it, but it handles very nicely.
They're hard to work on. It's hard to reach parts like the spark plugs on the passenger side. It seems to me that all Chevys are hard to work on. Things are just put together stupid. At least they were in the 80's.
I found it had leaked under my seats and had puddles in there. I couldn't figure out why.
It looks nice, obviously. But looks aren't everything. Make SURE you know what you're buying. Give it a test drive. or two. Be suspicious of anything under $3000.
You bought a 10 year old car and it seems that the previous owners were jerks and mistreated the car. With a 2.8L engine, I think you knew exactly what type of a car you were buying.
I bought a 84 Berlinetta and I paid $1250 for it. I had very good luck with it and it has a 305, but I hate the T tops, they leak like no other.
I am going to redo this car, I'm going to a build a 350 to the max and I going to paint it silver with blue racing stripes.
I have a 1989 IROC-Z with a 5.7L.It hauls ass! It's got to be one of the all time best body styles too.
I have the same exact car. 1989 2.8 ltr RS. I am 20 yrs old, and I take care of the car, something that the previous owner didn't. My car now has 188,000 miles and it is still going strong. As far as no power goes; it may not be a Z28, but it still flies.
I have a 89 RS with the 305, 5 speed, and I have had to replace the distributor - rusted up on the wires, <- cap & rotor, fuel pump, fuel filter, headliner <- big one on Camaros, clutch <- squeaky little thing, throttle position sensor, map sensor, and "rebuilt" the tbi, and new 255/60R15 in back, and 215/65R15 in front with American Racing rims, but the thing still halls ass when I need it too, but it only gets about 15mpg. Too bad I had to put that much money into it to get it that way.
I bought a '89 Camaro RS from someone that basically jury rigged the whole wiring system. I wouldn't have bought the car if had known about this, but it was a good price at $1400. Also the passenger side door doesn't open! Other than that it gets me where I what to go. I have a 305 V8 and 5-speed transmission. The t-tops are fine without any leaking (as far as I know). So I can kind of relate.
I have a 1989 RS Camaro 305 V8 5.0 I dunno, but I haven't lost one race I've been in (2001 mustang convert, 5 honda's,)
i haven't had any problems with it since I bought it 3 years ago. this thing rocks!! just be sure to get your Camaro checked out by a mechanic before you buy one!.
To the last guy you raced a V6 don't be too proud they only have 193hp. These cars in 2.8 trim or LO3 TBI trim are horribley slow and anemic! Iroc 305's are much much nicer they just need a manual! The only thing a 305 tbi is good for is beating up on most imports. The 2.8's are good for beating up on low end hondas and hyundai's...

I have a 1990 camaro rs with a 305 and catalytic converter stopped up I replaced it with a straight pipe and it come to life just a suggestion, not the fastest on the road, but definitley no the slowest the 5 speed helps a lil.
I have a 89 rs with a 350fi that came from a caprice cop car I had no trouble until I burnt the trans out very nice car wish it had t-tops.
If you knew what you were douin these camaros are easy to work on!!! I have completley changed my 89 rs from 2.8 5 speed to a 450 hp 355 small block with a 5 speed and had no trouble doinng so.
I have a 1989 camaro wich had a v6 I swapt it with a 350 tpi that came directly from a wrecked corvette now it runs great.
I have a 1989 camaro rs t-top it came with a 2.8 which was nice, but I just droped a 388 in it it is fast and handles great great car to own.
