The car is running on 2 cylinders. I'm replacing the engine soon.
I needed to replace the alternator.
I replaced the front brakes and rotors.
I replaced the front control arm.
I've had a hard time with wipers, and the driver's side wiper pops out of the socket.
I am driving this car on 2 cylinders. When I bought the car it only had 2 cylinders, so it has gone at least 25,000kms (50,000 miles) on 2 cylinders with few problems (it's much slower).
This car is great. It's very cheap to run, and it's pretty comfortable considering I'm a 6'2, 340lb man.
If maintained properly, this car will be perfect for singles, or for very small families who need a 2nd car.
I have a Geo Metro hatchback 1.0 3 cylinder that I bought for $175.00 from some guy who was moving. It leaked oil and believe it or not, ran on one cylinder. You had to floor the gas for 5 seconds to start it it up. But it always got me there.
Then one day it lost so much power I couldn't even go up a hill in first. The head gasket blew and 2 valves burnt holes in them, with new head gasket, rod bearings, Bosch Platinum 4 spark plugs (recommendable but $5.99 a piece), wires, air filter, oil filter, all new seals, new valves etc.
That car performed with at least 65 to 70 horsepower and it was all stock, it will spin the tires up to second, not bad for a 3.
I bought my '92 Geo Metro used for 400.00. I was running on two cylinders for 20000km. After that if started burning to much oil. So I bought another Metro for 200.00 for parts. The second engine has 250 000km and still running great.
There good reliable cars and I would recommend them to anyone. Just don't hit anything.
I have a 92 geo hatchback and it runs and runs and it runs!
And anytime I get a flat I just go buy a new tire because the tire is very cheap until lately! They don't stock them no more! And I have a hard time finding them or if I do they want an arm a leg for them. I wonder what should I do? If I go the next size, I have to buy all new rims and that can be very costly! If you can give me sugestion on what I should do,email me at patatlibrary@yahoo.com
Thanks

I have a 92' Geo metro 4 door sedan with just under 400 000kms on it. Its worked flawlessly since new, barely needing anything at all. I still drive this car every day, but the age is finally starting to show. Every time I start it, I have to floor the gas until it fires and gradually runs on all 4 cylinders. The gas mileage is great, but the one flaw is that the body has rusted out completely. Other than that it's an awesome car.
My 1992 hatchback has 143,000 miles I did replace the head recently. It was just a burned exhust valve so check that first. car runs great now put new radiator and soon I will do its first brake job. I do have 14 inch mags and 215/60
which are much easier to find than the trailer tires it came with.
I have a 92 Geo metro my wife bought in 95 from a dealer. It's a good little car it just rolled 100,000 kms have done no engine repairs other than plugs, distributor cap, fuel filter and I change the oil every 5000 kms.Other than the doors rusting out I can see me doing every thing to keep this car on the road considering the way gas prices are these days now it cost my a whole 23 dollars cdn for each month I use it I think its great.
Hi all!! I have a lowered 92 geo metro with 221.000 km on it. Still runs like new. The main and most important thing I did to the car was lower it 3" replace the trailer tires with some 13" rims with 205/50/13 bfg tires. And man what a difference in my affordable go kart. I just recently have been having problems with my fuel pump, as the car keeps sputtering really bad when the pump warms up. I changed the plugs, fuel pump, And some methyl hydrate in the gas tank for possible condinsation (water) etc. No change. I was told that the fuel pump might be packing it in. Has anyone had an issue with the electronic fuel pump? THANX MIKE;) Beautiful British Columbia Canada
If it's sputtering Likely you've got burned exhaust valves. Check the engine compression. You can buy a compression tester at any automotive shop. You should have at least 130 psi per cylinder. If one is considerably less, you've found the problem.
I just got my 92 Metro xfi from my mom. It has 120,000 on it. The motor sounds like a diesel. But it got 59 and 62 mpg driving it home. And it went over a mountain pass with little effort. It has been in the family since new. Do all the 3 cyl motors sound like a diesel?
Car sputters or won't go up a hill, sounds like a bowling ball rolling around in the gas tank* There is a tank inside the gas tank that holds fuel to the pump when the fuel level in the tank is low, mine broke loose from the bottom of the tank then cut the hose *still inside the gas tank so it wasn't dangerous, just that the pump was pumping most of the fuel back into the tank instead of up to the engine. Be careful welding the inside tank back down, it can cause holes in the outer tank, a little solder solved that issue for me. I ran for years on a spare electronic fuel pump I put in under the hood, but still had problems sometimes. I recently went to put in a new pump and low and behold didn't need $200+ in a new fuel pump, but a 50 cent piece of hose. If it sounds like a diesel, it may be that the exhaust valve in number 2 has failed. I wish I had read this before I started this issue, it has already cost me several new parts and a lot of time that I would have saved. Head is now in the shop for an exhaust valve job and general cleaning.
Lot of burned exhaust valves here! Why? Turns out the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) passages are too narrow (design flaw) in the 3 cyl engine, and also go thru the head, so the water cooling keeps them too cool and they accumulate soot and clog up. Then the mixture is too hot, and burns the valves. I drilled my EGR passage oversize when I had the head off. Also, people tend to put in 30W oil, which is a no-no. The motor needs 5W-30 (5W-20 in cold weather) or the higher viscosity oil keeps the hydraulic valve lifters pumped up too much and the exhaust valves fail to close completely and they burn. (It is the contact of the exh valve with the seat that keeps it cool enough not to burn up in the stream of the exhaust gas.) You can check the EGR very simply by removing a hose in the EGR system (not sure which one right now) during idle; if the engine stumbles, the EGR is OK. Best to blow the passages out with carb cleaner and compressed air every year, anyway!
I bought a 1992 Geo hatchback, 4 door new in 1992, 5 speed. I got 45 miles/gal, and I loved that car. Wish at that time I could afford to keep it and a new car that I needed because my (L) hip went out, and I couldn't push down on the clutch, so I needed an automatic. I swear that hatchback could hold half of my household items. Have never found a car since that suits my needs.
It had a Suzuki engine.
Best car I ever owned.
Wish they still made them.
I just bought a '92 Geo Metro, 1.0 litre, 3 cylinder hatch. It is running a bit rough so I got it for a great price (so I thought). I took it to my mechanic who said he wouldn't waste the price of oil in this thing because it only has 2 cylinders working. Any idea how much this costs to fix (in Canada)?
Thanks!!!
I love my geo.
I recently purchased a '96 Geo Metro 3 door hatchback. 1.0 3 cylinder 5 speed manual. I paid $450. The engine has a blown head gasket, the water pump needs replaced and the transmission has no 2nd gear. Body & interior is in great shape. This car still gets 41 mpg! It will be worth the $$$ for the repairs with gas approaching $4.00/gallon.
