1994 Cadillac DeVille Concours from North America - Comments

"A beautiful performance luxury sedan"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Starter.

Electric passenger seat switch.

Lower ball joint.

General comments?

Lots of passing power.

Great gas mileage.

Up to 30 mpg on highway observed.

Starter was hard to change and was in an odd location. You have to remove the injector/intake manifold off. The starter is located topside between the cylinder heads. This is supposed to make the starter very durable. It costs 85 dollars for gaskets and $250 for the starter. I changed it at 50,000 miles and the amazing part was that it already had a re-manufactured starter in it. There goes the durability benefit of burying it inside the engine.

Lower ball joint started clunking at around 61,000 miles. I haven't seen how much this will cost.

This a very luxurious car with a nimble suspension, well as nimble as you can get when you weigh 4,000 pounds.

Good sound system.

Good climate control.

Plenty of space with very comfortable seats. Driving for 10 hours at a time is no problem.

I drove this off of a used car lot right into a road trip of over 3,000 miles.

Power to spare. Two-lane highways not a problem. 60-95 before you can look down.

I have had my 1994 Cadillac DeVille (base) FOR 2 months NOW AND NOTHING HAS GONE WRONG. I bought the car from a local new Cadillac dealer, so I paid around 10,000 dollars for it. It was worth every penny. The car was a one owner, 25,000 mile trade in from Florida, and it is in perfect condition in and out.

The car was GM certified and came with a warranty, they even had me meet the previous owner of the car, about a 70 year old doctor. It is a very good looking car - silver with a black coach roof with grey leather.

I was driving the car to a local car show and parked it and left the windows open, and another car dealer made an offer of 15,000 for the car and I said sorry, I would not part with my car. My girlfriend said the car was an old person's car and she laughed at me until she drove it, and now she drives it as much as I do.

I bought my 1994 Cadillac Sedan DeVille in 1996 and it has been a dream. I've had only one problem and that was the A/C compressor which needed to be replaced in 2001.

Because it is 8 years old, we started looking at newer Cadillacs and are interested in a 1999 Seville. The reviews I read here about that model are awful and I'm beginning to think seriously about keeping the one I have because it's lovely and there's nothing wrong with it. I paid $20,000 for it when it was 2 years old and had been turned in to GM at the end of a lease. Today, I am told I might sell it for $10,000. That sounds like a good investment to me.

I am new to Cadillac ownership. I have had my base model Sedan DeVille for two and a half days. It has the 4.9 liter V8 and 4t80E transmission. It has 133,000 miles. I have had no problems with it yet. It has good power and fuel mileage seems excellent for such a large vehicle. I was also surprised to learn that this Caddy weighs only 3,758lbs. (sans driver). There is no rust on the outside of the car. The only rust I found was on the inside bottom edge of the doors. There is mild peeling of the clear coat on the wheels. The car is ruby red with gray interior. The driver's seat is somewhat worn, but all its features seem to work. I also love the digital dash and information center. It is also interesting to note that on Cadillacs you can turn off all of the display except for the speedometer, but on Lincolns the display simply dims with your headlights. I paid $3900 for my car and it books for around $5100. I was also able to purchase a 2yr. 30,000 mile warranty through the dealer. The Caddy has a clean Carfax report and I am looking forward to years of pleasant driving.

HI I think you got ripped-off

The starter is not mounted between the heads, but under the motor at the rear (I have one and I read the shop manual as I write this...) Starter replacement procedure:remove or disconnect... negative battery cable/raise vehicle/starter motor shield/exhaust front and rear pipe assembly /flex-plate inspection cover/solenoid 's' terminal nut and battery cable nut/starter motor mounting bolts/starter motor It's sad that people know so little about their cars. Get informed not stolen Buy the original service manual for your specific car even if you know nothing about mechanics. You will be able to see if your mechanic is honest and even then, he will bee more than happy to have the exact info. he will work better and will charge you less searching. it will be a very good investment..

I wish the previous person who is such an "expert" on the location of starters and Cadillac service HAD HIS FACTS STRAIGHT!

The original person is right! The starter is located in the "valley" of the "V" on top on Northstar engines. As you can guess, it makes changing the part more difficult.

Here are a few good links for Northstar Engines:

http://caddyinfo.netgetgoing.com/

Please don't confuse 4.5L or 4.9L engines with a Northstar 4.6L. They are very different!

Sorry if that came across too harsh, but he was sure harsh to the poor person who started this thread.

I have bought a 1994 Concours with 30K miles in 1996. It currently has 234k miles on it and continues to amaze me on the road. Yes, it is a lazy boy on wheels and driving it is a joy, especially long distance. I had replaced the fuel pump last year (200K), the oil pan seal replaced at 150K and other than normal maintenance, that is IT! The engine still doesn't use any more oil than it did when I first bought it. I love the body style so much I just purchased (Oct05) a 1997 DeVille (20K miles). I would recommend a Cadillac to anyone that wants some comfort and mass on the road.

Signed,

Happy Camper.

Has anyone had a problem with a left side cracked exhaust manifold on the 94 4.9ltr De-ville? I have recently purchased a 1994 De-ville from a dealer and discovered a crack in the front manifold. Under the warranty he has tried to obtain a used one, but all of the ones he has looked at were cracked. I was wondering if Cadillac have had a recall or if there is a secret warranty?
