Head gasket replaced with an MLS head gasket.
Sun-roof repairs.
This is a very reliable car.
No problems, runs perfectly.
I've ran it at the drag races with no problems.
Just a note: I bought a 1998 Neon Expresso in Sept of 2000. Since then it has been in the shop for numerous things.
- Blown head gasket (3 months after I got it)
- When they changed the gasket they noticed a crack in the exhaust manifold, so that had to be changed.
- Condenser for athe ir conditioner (air didn't work the first summer I had it).
- Spark plug shot out of the head, so a Healey coil was put in. (Sept 01)
- Now it's in for repairs, my car wouldn't start the other day, turns out the crank sensor gave up the ghost.
- Also a few little things have gone wrong with it:
Trunk doesn't open via the key, it hasn't for about a year now, I have to use the lever beside the driver's seat.
My stereo had a short in it, and it wasn't putting out much sound, almost sounded like an AM station was on all the time.
Gas gauge is not working, I found that out the hard way. Ran out of gas one day (about 3 months ago).
Windows don't seem to seal properly.
So as you can see, I bought a lemon, and the sad part is when people see my car the first thing they ask is have you changed your head gasket yet? If I were to buy another car, which I think I will be really soon, it will never be a Neon!
I bought a 1998 Plymouth Neon Highline Expresso (2.0 litre, DOHC) in October 2001. The car is fast, reliable, comfortable and runs like a dream. My only complaint is the vicious glare on the windshield -- sunglasses are a must!
Wish me luck -- so far, there are no problems with the head gasket.
My '98 Plymouth Neon Expresso is no less than a dream, what else could you possible ask for in a vehicle? Excellent gas mileage, very quick and responsive, a very unique and non-"mainstream import" look, dangerously easy to mod, and above most, cheap and reliable. I have had very few problems - hardly worth worrying about and easily fixed at home. The most serious being... well I can't think of any. Its just a great car and has been for 3 years. Reguardless of what kind of car you have, its not going to last long if you don't take care of it so plz, be nice to you're neon - it will, without a doubt, return the favor.
My car:
67,000 miles.
17x7" American Racing rims and tires
Eibach 1.3" lowering springs and struts
Iceman Cold Air Intake
Flo-master Exahust system.
On the list:
Altezza Meatballs $100
WingsWest body kit $800 + paint + shipping
Tinting $50
clear side markers $20
too many to list!
I just purchased a 1997 Plymouth Neon Highline/Expresso.
I am hoping that it will last several years. I am a little concerned about the one comment with the head gasket. I am hoping that it was just a bad car and not how they all are. The only complaint I have so far is the color (Miami Vice pastel aqua), so I will be getting it painted black.
Shawty, I got a 95 neon sport and its junk the brakes fell off from the emergency spring breakin and the window don't seal right and my transmission is slippin I would recomend a honda.
I bought my 1998 neon about 2 years ago. It has 85000 miles on it. The only things that have gone wrong is my passenger window won't seal right. Also, my linkage cable snapped in half. It runs great other than that!
Well I have a 1998 plymouth neon dohc with a 5 speed transmission. it's a very fast car. I race it in street class all the time and it blows hondas away. I have had only 1 problem and that was with my heater. other than that it is very cheap on gas a it goes great.
I Have a 1997 Neon Expresso with 142000 miles, and I love it. The windows don't seal right, but otherwise no problems. I bought a neon that had been wrecked and so it has a 1999 engine in it and they fixed the head gasket issues after 1998, all around cheap, fast, nice, and I love my little car.

Wow, a clear testament to the Neon's reliability, especially the part where you had to REPLACE the engine.
Add one more to the list of head gasket failures. I bought a 1997 Neon in 2000 and the head gasket needed replacing within a year. It had less than 50,000 miles on it.
