This car turned out to be a piece of junk. The engine died at only 91,000 miles and needed to be replaced. The good thing is that it was only $1200 to get a rebuilt engine put in and the parts for the Metro are very inexpensive. In addition, it gets great gas mileage. This is offset, however, by the cost of constantly having to replace everything because the car is so flimsy and weakly built and by the inconvenience of having to repair it constantly.
I drive a 95 Geo Metro 2-door hatchback daily in my work. I started to drive it as a company car when it was 2 years old. After one year, the lease was done and I bought it out for my-self. I drive about 5000 km./month (one oil change every month). I don't think this car is flimsy or poorly built, it's up to 276000 km, and yes some parts have been replaced. 2 exhaust system, 1 alternator, 1 battery, 1 Waterpump, 2 timing belts, 3 fan belts, brakes all-around about once a year (+ sparkplugs etc). BUT this is not unrealistic when you drive this much, and of course I do all my repairs my self.
I happened upon this site as I was researching geo metros. My birthday's coming up, and I've been bookmarking used metro convertibles on autotrader.com, hoping my dad gets the hint...) Well, this particular entry caught me off guard because I've heard nothing but good things about these cars until now. My general understanding is that the car will take care of you, provided that you take care of it. Enough said.
I am an automotive technician and the owner of a 1993 Geo Metro. It is a 3 cylinder 1.9L engine with 115 thousand miles on it. This vehicle gets about 40 miles to the gallon. You complained of having to replace brakes, exhaust, plugs/wires.. This is all absolutely normal, including the timing belt and engine; parts do tend to wear as time goes by. No one really seems to realize that, everyone just tends to think hey, it shouldn't ever need work because its a car. I see WAY too much of that, and it costs the owner far more in repair costs than it should have. Keep your car in shape and it will treat you quite well.
I have just one thing to say It's not a tank it is a 3 cylinder gas economy car and should be driven as such!!!
You must have pushing it buddy! I have a 1994 Geo Metro with 275000 miles on its original transmission and engine. Sure it isn't fast, but HELLO! 3cyl not meant to go 120+mph.
I think the Geo Metro is the best car I ever had. Its great on gas its goes really fast, with the few upgrades I did to the engine high performance plugs, wires, distributor, K&N air filter, racing clutch,I put in about 2 months ago wow talk about a good competition against these other compact cars.
I have a 1993 Geo Metro 4 door hatchback and it has 132 thousand miles. We have put one starter, brakes, tires, batteries, clutch and one timing belt. It still gets about 52 mpg and when other cars are slow by snow our Geo keeps going.
Looking up Metros and found your sight.Iv'e never owned one yet. But I belive that their good little cars. I would like a 3 cyl,2door.It's go to be better on gas than my 1971 ford LTD. lol Do you think the Geo will fit in the LTD's trunk??lol.
I owned my 93 Geo Metro 2-door hatchback for 10 years now, and I'm proud to say the car has never been in the shop. Everything under the hood is original. This is the best and most reliable car I've ever owned. I've been shopping around for a new car (have some dents in the Metro), but listening to new car owners having major repair problems, I think I'll just have my Metro painted and keep it until it falls apart.
I have owned a 1993 Geo metro for about a year and a half now. I can honestly say its the best car I've ever owned. Since getting it I have replaced all 4 tires (two because they were bald, the other two because I hit a deer and spun out), The battery, the muffler, and a brake line. The car was a beater when I got it and still is, yet over the past year, I haven't put more than 200 dollars into it. Granted, I did most of the work, or had friends help me with the work, but still, 200 dollars would be the cost of just one repair on most other cars. If anyone is looking for a used car that they can learn how to work on, I highly recommend getting a geo, theyre cheap, the parts are cheap, everything is easy to get at when doing repairs, and they get excellent gas mileage.
I own a 95 2 door hatch back. I need to recharge my ac every summer, I also replaced my fan switch ($5 at a junk yard),a new muffler, and new tires. That is the only repairs I've had to do to it. It has never let me down. Best car I have ever owned!
I bought a '95 GEO Metro in March of 2002. It had 117,000 miles on it. It now has 160,000 miles on it. I have had the CV joints and brakes replaced and that's it. I work for a newspaper and on occasion have to run routes. It is hard driving on rough roads. I wouldn't have anything else on the job.
I just married a lady with a 1996
Geo Metro. The three banger does
well for the horsepower. It is a
fun little car. There is plenty of room. The mirrors are excellant. Visibility is a plus with this little package. Even with the AC on, it holds it own on the freeway. I run it up to 95 and the tack still had decent numbers. The most bang for the buck I ever seen.
You must not take care of your car at all! It sounds like you are abusing it because these metros are built to last. Better luck with your next car.
I have owned my 1993 Geo Metro, for about 2 years. I only drove her (Hope) for about 1 year and 3 months putting 16,000 miles on her. I have replaced the following: 3 Timing belts (because of a loose nut wearing it off), Fuel Pump (just because), 2 thermostats (over heating problem), 1 minor tune up, Four new tires, and driver's side stabilizer bar (because I backed up into a huge rock). Currently, I'm driving A 1992 Toyota 4Runner and don't exactly hate the Toyota, but extremely miss my car. Over the past 6 months I have been able to save enough money to re-build my little Geo completely, she needs a lot of work, she is really rickety right now. But when I'm done it will be an all new car. She has got me through a lot of hard times. I love that little Geo with all my heart.
