1997 Jeep Wrangler Sport from North America - Comments

"Don't be deceived by its cute looks!!!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Broken exhaust manifold!!!

Leaking steering gear box!!!

Rear wiper motor on hard top.

Front wiper motor.

Turn signal mechanism on steering wheel.

General comments?

I will never drive a Chrysler product again. First and last car from Chrysler ever.

Funny how the catalytic convertor has an 80,000 mile/8 year warranty and the exhaust manifold has a 24,000/2 year warranty. Makes real sense.

The thing is a piece of junk when it comes to maintenance. Fun car to drive, but not fun when always in the shop.

You said the warranty on the exhaust was only 2/24. The factory warranty is 3/36.

You also might like know that the warranty was extended on the exhaust manifold on the 2.5. They did not have to do this. I respect them for it.

I can't believe this. Every compliant That I have read regarding the Jeep Wrangler is so freakin true!!! I too have had the same problems..

1) 30,000 busted manifold (broken manifold studs. This happened on three separate occasions. (30,000, 68,000, 80,000) I'm just waiting for the next time.

2) 36,000 Catalytic converter craped out.

3) 65,000 Catalytic converter craped out again.

4) 90,000 Catalytic converter craped out again.

5) 97,000 Catalytic converter craped out again (most recent) How many times does one need to fix this crap.

6) 72,000 Radiator exploded under normal conditions. Left me stranded in the middle of nowhere.

7) Unexplained loss of power. Comes and goes literally on a daily basis. Been going on since about 20,000 miles.

8) 100,000 Busted water pump. Possibly the first normal repair.

9) Oh Yeah, I almost forgot.. I've had three Oxygen sensing units installed on this piece of junk.

This is probably the most stressful vehicle I have ever owned. I have never abused it. Its been driven under normal conditions.

Chrysler... You should be ashamed at the crap you are passing on to your customers. A word of advise "If you want to own a jeep, you need to posses to things: 1. A full time mechanic 2. your own ASE certification. Lord knows your gonna need it.

Don't wast your money!!! Buy a Toyota truck or something if you want a 4W/Drive.

I just had my transmission replaced at 40,000 miles and they told me the exaust manifold was under a 7yr 70,000 warranty. Check with your dealer. My jeep is a 98. The new jeeps all have extended warrenties to 7yrs or 70,000.

I hear ya! In the last 2 months I had to get a new water pump, radiator, my 3rd catalytic converter, and fan clutch. I take very good care of my jeep! Now, it is a piece of junk as far as I am concerned. My first catalytic converter was covered under warranty and when it went out again, service at Bob Baker Jeep in Carlsbad, CA informed me that it was 'too bad' and said that I had 'bad luck' and they won't fix it. Lovely! On top of all of the expensive repairs... in about a 2 week period my rear view mirror fell off, both of my speaker covers fell off, my ashtray broke and fell out and my glove box door fell off. Now that is ridiculous! Do not buy a Jeep unless you have a lot of $$ for repairs and some serious patience.

I currently have a 97 Jeep Wrangler with 101,000 miles. However, she has had three catalytic converters. My vent cable has snapped which cause the heat to only work. I have had two radiators installed. Also, my gas gage stopped working, which caused three days without my vehicle, do they had to dropped the fuel tank and replace the cable. I am now experiencing problems with my manifold for the second time in the last two years. Oil pump has gone out and is currently being replaced. I have constantly being replacing something on my Jeep. If I had to do over again, I would have never bought a Jeep and will never buy another Chrysler product. If you see a Smoking Jeep or hear a loud thunderous Jeep passing by your house. That's me because I have run out of money trying to keep it up. Good Luck to all Jeep Owners.

A Jeep Owner.

My 98 jeep wrangler is now on its third catalytic converter. I have 83,000 miles on it. It just so happens that it is 3,000 miles over warranty. Did anyone else have to pay $500 to have theirs fixed??? What is the life expectancy of this part anyway??? This shouldn't be a part that is replaced as often as windshield wiper blades should it? Will I be paying $500 every year and a half? Help.

Jeeps used to be great products when owned by AMC after chrysler bought them out the turned them to rolling pieces of crap... by all means buy jeep vehicles 1995 or older. Those are real quality.

Well I have to agree with you all on a lot of points. Just Empty Every Pocket when it comes to Jeeps, but I think a lot of these issues can be avoided with routine maintenance. I love my wrangler and don't mind fixing it up every now and again because I don't think an unbreakable car exists.
