Normal items tend to wear out - alternator, a/c compressor, rack and pinion, my brake calipers seized at rear and front passenger side of the vehicle.
This car has been extremely reliable and is probably one of the best built Audi products. It needs to be driven, if the car sits things tend to go bad. This car gets better and better as you drive it.
Once you get a good Audi mechanic and a source for inexpensive parts, this car is cost effective.
With these cars (Audis's) mileage tends to easily accumulate in excess of 150,000. At that time, somethings gotta give. Used parts for these cars are readily available making them a good value.
I have an 87 audi 5000s, and an 85 audi 4000s, and both of them have well over 200,000 miles. they both run great and have never needed any major work. However, my dad has an 85 audi 5000s wagon and the tranny kicked the bucket, but the speedo stopped working 2 yrs. ago at 275,000.
I have a 1987 Audi 5000s, and I have to say that they are nice well built, solid, and safe cars. It just seems like they made a lot of things more complex then they had to, like the hydro boost system... There is plenty of room under the hood why didn't they just use a vacuum booster? The reason why a lot of these cars see the junk yard is because no one wants to spend all that money to fix the hydro boost system on a 20 year old car.
Even with newer audi's you can't get 100,000 miles on them without wheel Bearings going out. Many little things that still to this day make audi's a nickle and dime car.
