The car's computer had to be reset when the battery was replaced, because the car kept stalling.
It started leaking oil right after 100,000 miles.
Not long after that, the front brakes had to be replaced.
Then the fuel pump died.
I like it a lot. It's got stink, and personality. It is very fond of having the "Check engine" light come on for no apparent reason, and for taking two or three cranks to start. Nonetheless, it was flawless up to 100,000 miles. I've had the car for about two and a half years and just started having problems with it this January (it's now June) and those problems could be written off as growing pains as the car hits the six-digit mile mark.
Hey I was just wondering what it took to reset the computer... I have had My 90 Olds Cutlass Supreme for just about 15 Months and I drove it down to Phoenix and it started acting up really bad now I'm stuck down here and I live in Southern Indiana... I know that it all started after it turned over 130,000 miles tho... since then it has gotten 600 miles put on it along with a new set of Bosch Plat 2 Plugs (7.00 a piece) and new wire set along with new MAP sensor and that didn't fix it now I think it might be the TPS... Aside from the Transmission Leak and the Oil Leak out of the "distributor plug" I cannot complain about this car.
In response to the first quote, to reset the computer, you have to go to a mechanic and tell them to reset it. They'll do it and it'll cost about 40 bucks, and then you'll be on your way.
I'm the guy who originally wrote the review on the car, so I can add some. I'm now over 106,000 miles, and it's still running well. It's had no further mechanical errors at all since my initial review, which is really something. I had to get the computer reset after putting a new battery back in, courtesy of the glovebox breaking such that the light wouldn't go off. (This was my fault, not the car's, since I slam it when closing it and eventually it just broke.) I'm ditching it this summer for a Corolla, but I'll go out with fond memories of it.
I'm looking into buying a 1991 Cutlass with 40,000 for $2000.
You say that your car was fine up to 100K. Did you have any abnormal maintenance problems before that?
Thanks.
Do your self a favor and stay away from the Cutlass supreme. They are great to drive, but when they run into problems, expensive to repair and the mechanics are not all that bright in repairing them.
I have a 96 Cutlass Supreme, this has been a awesome car for me. This car has 198,000 miles on it and the only thing I have had to do to this car is replace the tranny and the alternator (regular oil changes and a few batteries). To date everything, but the cruise works on the car. This car is loaded with all the options and it is so reliable I can't bare to part with it.
The thing that amazes me is I have never changed the valve cover or oil pan gaskets and this thing never leaves a drop on my garage floor. This is the first Oldsmobile I have owned and I am sold on this car.
