1989 Peugeot 405 Mi16 from UK and Ireland - Comments

"A classic French flying machine"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Two weeks after buying the car the A.B.S. (anti-lock braking system) warning light was constantly illuminated along with the "STOP" light, but still had good working brakes.

One week later the break fluid reservoir started smoking and the A.B.S. fuse kept blowing, which resulted in total loss of brakes (scary!). A computer diagnostic at a Peugeot dealer revealed a number of faults to the cost of £600 including a new A.B.S. computer, a new brake fluid reservoir, and labour.

Replaced ball joints.

Replaced drive shafts/C.V. joints.

Engine overheating, replaced thermostat.

Electric sunroof won't close all the way due to a worn gear in the motor assembly. Peugeot supply a repair kit (to my surprise) for this common fault.

Water leaking into boot, renewed boot seal, still water leaking into boot, can't figure where the hell it's coming from.

I decided to strip out the interior side trims which revealed water running down the back pillars, past the back shelf and into the boot. I had to have the back window re-sealed to fix the problem.

Electric window switches very tempremental. I find that dust can cause a bad connection inside the switch unit, especially when they haven't been used for a while.

The idle control valve (compensator) needs replacing at a cost of £200 to my amazement. It's only function is to provide a smooth idle speed.

Can be unplugged if it plays up to much.

General comments?

This has got to be the best car I've ever driven for performance and handling even though it still has the standard 160bhp.

This car has given me hours of driving fun and sure does keep me busy in the garage.

The sporty exterior styling is complemented with a full black leather interior.

Still runs well at 11 years of age and with over 140k on the clock.

Hi there.

I think your leaking boot problem is from the rear windscreen. I had the same problem with my old 1989 405 Mi16. The glue keeping the screen in splits a little and the water comes through. The only way to fix it is to get a windscreen company to unglue and replace.

Good luck.

Al.

I recently brought a MI16 about June and have had a few issues with it. Brought the car for £500 from a guy that didn't have a clue about cars (He took me for a test drive and never took it over 4000rpm!!! Just when it's warming up nicely!!!) He then moaned that it was not a quick car at all!

Anyway the ABS light was permanently illuminated and after getting it checked it out it turned out to be faulty sensors. The brake pedal feels soft, but the brakes are still strong?

If anyone has had any problem with the idle speed of the engine I would love to know as mine is dropping to about 750rpm and it sounds a bit rough!! Has recently been tuned as well, very strange!!

Overall a superb car which is sadly overlooked, as if driven correctly (keep that engine on the boil!!) it's an extremely rapid motor. I have had very happy motoring since my purchase and although it's an expensive car to run and keep on the road, it's highly rewarding!!

My fellow Peugeot owners.

In 1991 I bought a Mi16 here in the states, I held on to it for 8 years, it was the worst mistake I've ever made.

I had problems with my water pump, sun roof leak, idle trouble, power windows, sway bar, exhaust, lights and the worst was that my timing belt broke at 35000 miles. When this happened all of my valves bent, a cylinder head got hit and I had to get the motor built again. For three weeks it was in the dealer shop, and when I finally got it back, one of the lifters for one of the valves was ticking.

MY ADVICE FOR ANYONE WHO HAS A 405Mi16, GET RID OF IT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!!YES IT LOOKS SEXY, BUT REMEMBER LOOKS AREN'T EVERYTHING THING.

JANUS USA.

PEACE.

Sorry to hear that you had so many problems with your MI. We have had ours for two years, and have had relative few problems with it. A rough idle? These cars are suspposed to have a rough idle due to the camshafts lift and duration. As far as anything breaking. The only problem we have had is the pass. side power window died. Gas mileage could be better 28 m.p.g.,but cosidering the MI16 is a factory hot rod its not bad. The only faults I have found with the car is the lack of head room, and the oil filter is hard to access.

About the leaking boot problem.. There is a drain-tube going from the fuel hole. that's a common problem that the tube is broke and you have a swimmingpool in the trunk.

I own a MI16 and I love it. had it for 2 years.

I am the owner of a Peugeot 405 miles 16 g register. Unfortunately I experience a problem with the ABS. No brakes at all. I am thinking of deleting the ABS system. Anybody who does have that problem?Anybody who solved it?

The low idle speed/ rough idle sounds familiar, I also found that if I dabbed the accelerator pedal quickly once, the engine would rev twice-'var-room', the rev speed would fall steadily to around 500rpm then cut out as if the cam-belt had been stretching, twanging between the cam pulley's, and then catching up it's correct timing. I changed the Cam-belt and now my runs at a steady 850rpm on a 190,000 miles old, 1991 XU9J4 (D6C) engine, the 160bhp non-cat, 2wd version. I was told that the belt tends to stretch slightly and knocks the timing out.

I have an Mi16x4 it is/was the best car I've ever owned off the road for over three years with supposed transfer shaft problem after fitting new box still the same turns out my local Peugeot dealer hadn't bothered to adjust the clutch when it was replaced!! adjusted it one week ago seems fine now.

This car (when running) is fast and handles like nothing else I've ever been in!

Water in boot was leaking seal around rear lights!

Switches are tempramental, but so what?

THESE CARS ARE GREAT

get one and keep it forever!

405 mi16 had one for 5 years with very little trouble strongly regret selling car. rough idle problems are the control valve and dirty throttle butterfly clean with carb cleaner and all should be well. mi16s are the most underated sports saloon around absolute flying machines. if you can find one keep it in 10 years they will be worth serious money uk.
