This truck idles so poorly on cold starts that it often stalls.
Until the truck warms up, it is sluggish and "punchy".
The transmission requires a rebuild after the truck is only three months old. Several of its bearings are shot already!
The parking brake light won't turn off.
The driver side window "clunks" when doing down.
This truck is quite possibly the biggest piece of junk ever made. It has been in the shop seven times in the 3-4 months that I have owned it!!!
The power is nice once the truck warms up, but until then it is pathetic.
The stalling is getting dangerous. Especially when it does on a highway.
Dodge has told me that they cannot fix the idling and stalling problem and that it is "characteristic of this truck". They said (and I quote) "You'll just have to learn to live with the erratic idle. It doesn't stall that often, so I wouldn't worry about it".
Ram was once a great truck. Things change. I know a slew of other '99-'01 Ram owners whose trucks have fallen apart. I can't say this enough, "Avoid Dodge Ram"!!
I have A 95 RAM 1500 reg. cab short bed with a 5 inch lift 35 inch tires and stock gears. The truck has a 360 auto with 101500 on them and I have never had a problem with my truck I use it off road and run it in mud bogs frequently. This truck takes a licking and keeps on tick-en.
I have a 95 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 and it's the best vehicle I've ever owned. To be honest it runs better than my 2000 F-250 work truck. The Ram's 360 has 93000 miles on it and still runs like new. And the body is still in excellent condition. I love my Dodge.

I bought a 2002 dodge ram 1500 quad cab in may / june time frame. I have had nothing but problems with it from day 1! 3 bad tires which made the truck shake so bad at 65 mph that I had to drive at 55 mph (yes! 10 miles below the "normal" speed limit) on highways. I had to bring it back 3 times to the dealer and suggest that they check the tires and rims (keep in mind I know nothing about fixing trucks, but it seemed like common sense to me) before they called to tell me I had 3 bad tires and guess what!? we are going to give you "4" new ones! (like they were doing me this huge favor). On top of that they said they checked the left rear axle and it was "off a few millimeters" so in good faith they were replacing that also. a few months later the truck starts stalling on me! today is the second time I brought it back to the dealer to have this problem fixed. They told me previously that it was s problem with the computer chip and it had to be reprogrammed! OK... guess this very dangerous problem has been fixed? No! starting stalling again on me yesterday and again today in which keep in mind when it stalls you lose your power steering which resulted in me and my 9 year old daughter on Dunkin Donuts front lawn!!! Do not buy a dodge ram 1500 pickup It is nothing but junk! Oh, did I fail to mention that the rear tailgate fell off when I opened it!
I am a proud owner of a 2001 Ram 1500 Quad Cab. It has been the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. I purchased it used with only 12000 miles on it. It has taken me to southern California numerous times and the the ride is so smooth. The best part about driving my truck is to see the look on peoples faces (especially the drivers of sports cars!) as I pass them up. I would most definitely purchase another Dodge truck. In my opinion it is the best truck ever made.
I can fill this whole web page up with horror stories of GM PRODUCTS as well as FORD. I mean new vehicles as well as used ones. Everybody gets a bad one every once in a while, so don't blame a whole corporation for a few mistakes, they all make them.
I have a 2000 dodge dakota 4 door 4x4 and ever had a problem. it now haves 86,000 mile and keeps going. I take it offroad when ever I get a chance.
I too have a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 with suicide doors. I traded in a Chevy Astro Van 1993 for it. I can truthfully say now that I regret the trade in. I got great gas mileage from the Astro Van and never any problems, just regular maintenance. However, with the Dodge Ram the engine light stays on constantly even after several trips to the dealership and them "resetting" the computer chip. The transmission is a constant problem. The truck is sluggish, has no power, and eats gas like crazy. It is fine for driving on side streets, but get it on the expressway and you are in trouble. It just has no get up and go. I bought it the year it was made 2001. It had only 12k miles, now it has 36k and I just keep taking it back to the dealership to have it fixed. I am not sure if its the make and model or the mechanics. But I will confess that I will NEVER purchase a Dodge Ram again. No wonder I see the used car lots full of them.
I own a 99 Ram 1500 with a 5.9, it runs great and will tow anything, the gas mileage isn't great, but its is dead reliable. I have only replaced the battery (the original MOPAR unit from the date of purchase. The truck is serviced regularly and driven daily. I drive this truck and use it as such, it is lifted and sees off road use as well as long distance hauls (Alaska to Arizona and Arizona to Pennsylvania) and I love it. If someone were to tell me they were shopping for a good used truck I would highly recommend a Ram. The person who posted to stay away obviously purchased a vehicle that was not take care of and abused regularly.
I own a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4. It is without a doubt the worst truck I've ever owned.
At 75k the trans started to go.
The engine has a small knock to it when it's warming up.
Transfer case had a big leak.
Transmission started to leak 3 months after Dodge installed a new one.
Rear end leaks.
The paint is rusting and chipping in certain spots.
On the highway the truck drifts all over the place.
The 5.9 engine has no power. It's a 360! My old Ford 302 used to smoke the tires, this thing won't even chirp them. What junk.
I love the new Dodges, cars and trucks, but I would be an idiot to buy one after the crap I've been through with this thing.
Dodge trucks used to be a contender for #1, but now all they're worth is a brown #2. Dodge sucks!
I own 2001 dodge ram 4x4 with the 318 (5.2L) and a 5 speed and truck has tons of power I can light up my 33" tall tires while run stock 3.55 gears. And Now has 250,000km on the original trans, clutch, motor and axles and transfer case. It uses no oil or leaks anything and I get 14 mpg hauling a 6000 lb trailer.
It's been the best truck I every bought And I just do regular maintenance on it and I do pound on it.
We own a 2001 Ram 1500 and have had numerous problems with it. The transmission went out and thank GOD for the extended warranty. The dash has cracked and now has gaping holes in it. From what I've been able to find on the web, this is a systemic problem that Dodge is aware of and has chose to ignore hoping time will make it all go away. To date, Dodge has not attempted to correct the problem and simply offers to replace the dash for approx. $1500. If you have to work on it, good luck. I have never seen a worse piece of automotive engineering in my life. What would take an hour on a Chevy takes approx. three hours on a Dodge and once again, GOD help you if the work involves anything major. I will not ever own another Dodge product. It's no wonder the foreign makers are taking over the market given the garbage that the domestics are turning out.
