The first problem was the vibration throughout the car during stops while in gear (worse with A/C on). This was problem that Mazda indicated on a service bulletin. Dealer still could not fix.
Struts were replaced at 45000 miles.
First transmission failed at 75000 miles, the second failed at 138000, the third failed (according to the new owner) at 148000. Two Mazda dealerships indicated that the transmissions were a very big problem (pretty bad when the dealers admit to a problem like this).
Valves have been clicking since early on.
Brakes had to be replaced almost yearly.
The car would not stay aligned.
There is quite a bit more, but you get the picture!
Mazda has a serious problem with this transmission.
I have a 99 626. At 79000 my transmission went out also. The dealer doesn't want to fix the car. I will be going to my lawyer to see what can be done. Could you email me at ebony29052@aol.com and tell me more.
Thanks.
I have a 95 Mazda 626 and the transmission has gone out with only 74,000 miles on it. The transmission was rebuilt for $2077 and the overdrive light will not go off and it jerks when it pulls off from first gear. I took it back to the transmission company and they said it is a sensor problem. I have had the car a year and a half, and it is having major problems. I will never buy another Mazda in my life.

3 Years ago we bought a 1995 Mazda 626 with only 13,000 miles. Since then we have had the rotors replaced 2 times and now at 67,000 miles the transmission has burned up. We will never buy another one of these again.
I would like to add my comments about the Mazda 626 Transmission. We purchased a 1995 Mazda 626 in 1995, at about 40000 miles the transmission went out and was replaced. Now at 103000 the transmission has gone out again. The dealer indicates that they are unaware of any transmission problems with the Mazda 626. This will be the third transmission. One other thing I noted in a message was the alignment. We burn out a set of tires every 30,000 miles.
I have a 1995 Mazda 626. Bought it used with about 75k miles. Now at about 115k miles, having transmission problems. Either doing the o/d off light flashing & jerking into gear. Or it will just shift at 4500 RPMs & not shift again, so you'd be running at 5000 RPMs going 60 mph.

I purchased a used 1994 Mazda 626 with only 32,000 miles on it. Now at 62,000 miles, the "HOLD" light is flashing and the transmission crashes into the next gear. It feels terrible, and is very difficult to drive. Mazda has not issued a recall as of yet, and I don't expect them to. For such a nice little car, this tranny problem sure drags it down.
Looks like Mazda really screwed up the 626 series with cars between '95 and '00.
I have a '96 626 and after driving the car for about 30 minutes the o/d light will flash, then it shifts like crap after that going from 1st to 2nd gear.
Previous owner already replaced the original transmission, so this is number 2 acting ify. Called a local Mazda dealership and they said the blinking light syndrome is almost ALWAYS a need for a new transmission.
I have a 95 mazda 626 and the motor shakes a lot... It seems to have problems with the fuel filter or injectors... The transmission is fine though and it has 139000 miles on it.
My 1995 Mazda 626 is in for its second transmission rebuild.
The first problem was two years ago at 60K miles and cost $2400. This time I'm told it will be $1800. There is a well documented problem with the CD4E transmissions, built by Ford, in these vehicles. Mazda refuses to acknowledge any problems. You should register a complaint with the NHTSC (there are over 600 registered for the years 94-98). You can also call a Michigan law firm at 248-540-7660 that has started a class action lawsuit against Mazda.
I have purchased 1995 Mazda 626 in April 1999, and had no problems for 5 months, but then It started to get horrible. Transmission went down at 82,000 K's and I took it to the dealer where I bought it used and thanks God It was under the manufacturers warranty and I had to pay for towing from that dealership to a Mazda dealeship. The car stopped exactly at the entrance of this dealership (called Al's Motors, Kitchener, ON, Canada) like it was programmed to stop.
Also I replaced Valve cover gasket, timing belt and water pump twice in one month. I found out when coolant was leaking. It was making nose like Golf diesel or the tractor. I replaced CV joints, muffler (well I got lifetime warranty on that) all the pipes and now I have to replace the front pipe for exhaust. The engine is shaking and vibrating in rear gear (automatic transmission) and sometimes wants to turn off because of all shaking, and rpm's go lower than 700 rpm which is not good and car turns off. Brake pads wear off really quickly.
When I went to Mazda dealership to check my transmission I told them that when I put in reverse gear the car moves easily forward until it clicks (in gear) then starts going backwards. I was concerned that this transmission failed again! They did a compression test and It showed 180 PSI and they say It's good. Guys He was doing that 15 times in front of my eyes and He says It's good (putting in reverse gear and drive, over & over). I gotta check this transmission as soon as possible, also I have to replace rotors and ball joints.
Like someone said above my Mazda is also shaking even more when I turn on A/C, sad, but true.
Buy Toyota Camry, pay more, but don't buy anything from Mazda, even used vehicle that are not Mazda brand!!!
If anyone had similar problems, lets talk and tell me what to be aware of?
Thanks

There are well-documented problems with Mazda 626 transmissions built by Ford. See discussion on - http://www.cartrackers.com/Forums/live/YourLemon/189.html.
Mazda refuses to acknowledge any problem. If you have had any problem with a Mazda transmission you should register a complaint with the NHTSA at - http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/ivoq/default.htm.
You can also join a class action lawsuit against Mazda that a Michigan law firm will be filing soon by calling 248-540-7660. They say there is no upfront cost to do this. The fees would be taken out of any settlement.
I too have a 626 but a 2001 model. I have just bought it 3 months ago and the o/d light is already blinking. it has about 33080 miles on it and it had 27000 when I bought it. well I'm about to bring it to the dealership tomorrow and hopefully its nothing big.
I have a 94 Probe, with the same transmission. When I bought it from a dealer, used, I was not told of any transmission work, but after I changed the fluid and decided to take a closer look at the transmission, I noticed that it was new. The o/d off light flashes and it does the shaking while stopped deal as well. I read somewhere that it may simply be a speed sensor or something like that, but it is definitely a problem that should have been fixed before releasing this model transmission.
The transmission problem with the cd4e where the o/d light flashes on and off is related to the solenoid packs in the transmission.. this does not require a rebuild to fix.. That transmission is completely controlled by the computer for all of its shifting.. If the light is blinking try unhooking your battery for 10 minutes. Hook it back and see what the transmission does then.. this resets the computer system and will on some occasions cure this problem.
