2000 Mazda MX5 Miata Sport Package from North America - Comments

"Looking for a great little sports car? - NOT HERE!!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

General comments?

Even though I loved my '85 Fiero GT (V6), I wanted to drive something lighter and experience "the best little sports car on the road".

Boy was I disappointed.

The new models have power steering, totally destroying any of the "purist" feeling any of the older ones might've had with its sloppiness, lightness, and lack of feel.

These cars are unbelievable tiny, I don't think they're made for humans. I am only 5-4 and felt incredibly cramped. All the controls are equally Barbie-sized.

The engine with its gargantuan 1.8 liters of displacement makes for very slow acceleration.

It is very buzzy and uncomfortable to drive at speed; to keep up with traffic at 35mph you need to be screaming at 4000rpms! And this thing is touted as a "touring car"?!

Horrible piece of junk, nothing like what I expected, thank god for Fieros.

I disagree, the power is decent, has more room than the Fiero and is a kick to drive. Not to mention that they are as reliable as heck.

I've owned a couple of Fiero's, including the best of the breed, the '88 GT. I recently test drove a Miata. Magnificent car (I've decided to buy one). Perhaps a tad slower (though feels faster and more eager) than a V6 Fiero, but in every other respect a much better sports car.

Miata's are insanely fun to drive, and infinitely more communicative and precise than any Fiero. Although I loved my Fieros, I can't imagine anyone having driven both, preferring the Fiero to the Miata.

I totally disagree. The Miata is a great drive and far superior to the Fiero.

The worlds best selling sports car (2000) as per the Guiness Book of Records, so there.

I can't see how one can possibly compare a Fiero to a Miata. The Fiero is completely unreliable and while the 6 cylinder maybe slightly faster than the Miata, that's what the aftermarket is for. The Miata provides a great sports car experience while still a providing rock solid daily vehicle.

Hmm... I guess that's why the Fiero was discontinued and the Miatais still going strong after 12 years.

4000 RPM at 35 mph? Ummm, try shifting out of first. And I'm five ten with longs legs and my '92 fits me like a glove. I even have a buddy who's 6'3" who drives a Miata, although I think he's nuts.

Miata vs. Fiero? There's no comparison, the Miata beats it hands down. The Miata is much more reliable and better built. I drove a Miata once at a competetive review, and liked it so much I bought one new a year later.

Have you tried looking in the yellow pages under "salvage yards", I'm sure you can find another Fiero to suit your taste...

I haven't got a clue what a fiero is, they don't sell them over here in england, But my MX5 Sport (miata) limited edition, is a top car, I'm 6ft and have no problems with the room in the cockpit.

How can so many people all over the world be wrong???

Don't V6 fiero's only have 98hp?

I had a Fiero in the eighties. What a piece of junk. It was underpowered and didn't handle all that well. It required an engine overhaul at 65,000 miles. The fenders were rusting off anyway so I got the overhaul done and then sold it quickly.

I now have a 95 Miata that I bought new. It out accelerates, out corners and out stops a Fiero. It now has 87,000 miles on it. The only unexpected repair to my Miata was to rebuild a brake caliper at 70,000 miles. Other than that, the only maintenance it has ever had is oil changes, shocks, tires and other normally-expected maintenance. It still looks great. I like it so much that I bought a bigger Mazda and now keep the Miata as my second car, driven mostly on weekends. (The other Mazda is not a convertible.)

By the way, I am 6-foot one-inch tall.

The writer of this review obviously doesn't actually have the car, but has delighted in trashing it and getting a lot of response.. I commend him..

The miata is super reliable and fun.. I love my miata as much as my 86 rx7 before it (and that's a hard car to compare to) and both of my cars would trash a pontiac fiero, 4 or 6.

And to clarify the comment above about his fenders rusting off, the fieros fenders where made of composite ABS plastic, so I'm not sure what you where observing rusting..
