1990 Pontiac 6000 LE from North America - Comments

"Surprisingly fun and very reliable car"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Transmission skipping 3rd gear.

Driver's side seat is stuck (but in an OK position).

General comments?

This car handles amazingly, and is for some reason very fun to drive (this is the only car I've found myself going for cruises in).

There were performance and "get up and go" problems. I have done the following repairs/replacements - spark plugs/wires, air/fuel filters, thermostat, fuel pump, and general maintenance (fluids, etc.)

After doing the above list of things, the car runs beautifully, and leaps to life when I turn the key.

The best feeling is when a new Honda or Nissan pulls up to the stop light with all sorts of stickers, a coffee can muffler, and those annoying flourescent headlights or yellow fog lights. They see me driving an 11 year old family sedan and just sneer at me. 9 out of 10 times that little rice burner gets smoked. Doing that will never get old.

This has been a very good car to me. I hope that I can keep driving it for many long years to come. After I get the transmission fixed, I plan on doing whatever I can on it to make it faster. Maybe making a family sedan haul like a performance car seems dumb or foolish, but it's a personal goal of mine.

I my self am a Pontiac 6000 owner so if you could please tell me where I could find High performance parts for an 89 Pontiac 6000 LE. your article has inspired me to do the same thing. Make a four door family car go faster.

Thank you and I hope to hear from you soon.

But it's true. You really can blow by "rice-burners." This car has an amazing amount of pick-up for being so old. Don't knock it until you try it.

I love my 6000! I'd take it over an ugly NEW Honda any day.

First, yay and thanks for all the good comments on this car. it is helping me talk my dad into getting one for me (cuz it has high mileage, 300,000 kilometers... ooooohh lol)

Second, I did some research online and all I could find in terms of performance parts are basically what you could find in local auto stores. high-flow air filters/fuel injectors, platinum spark plugs/wires, basically all the stuff I can even find for my '90 Tempo. seemingly none of these cars built in that era were ever intended for real performance. the 6000 is rated at 130 HP, and 180 flb of torque... excellent for a $300 (canadian) car, considering I spent $1000 on a tempo with 98 HP and 120 flb of torque. but today's vehicles which are going to be the future "cheap

" cars like the tempo and 6000, have like 200 hp/lb torque (as in the case of our Taurus).

It's a crying SHAME that there aren't specialty places dealing in parts for 6000's and tempo's. these cars have the potential to be much better with a little tuning.

My P600 cured me of road rage. You can lane jump in front of me, sneer at me 1/4 mile before a stop light in your new little ugly silver tin sardine can, do whatever. A mile up the road, I'm smiling calmly while my old 2.8 l, V6 car leaps over yours. And I'm not even flooring it.

I used to own a 1990 P 6000, 3.1 V-6, 3-speed auto. From the outside, as we all know, these cars are very unassuming. Mine was white, with some black trim, hubcaps, and that was about it. The inside was neat as it had all the gauges (speedo, tach, gas, oil, batt, temp) lined up in a row going across the dashboard and at nice when lit in the pontiac "red", looked cool. One thing those cars do is h-a-u-l. I was amazed at how much power they put out. I believe the 3.1 put out 140HP (though I saw someone else wrote 130, maybe that was prior to 1990) anyway, one day my friend and I decided to drag race. His car was a '92 Bonneville, 3.8 V-6 4-speed auto, 170HP, not sure of the torque. So as we all know the bonneville is definitively a heavier car than the 6000, but the additional HP and torque plus the fact that the bonneville was made to be a monster helped even out the playing field. So we raced. Off the line we were neck and neck. I held on to him until 50MPH, and that as all of us with the 3-speed autos know, is the shift point to 2nd gear, and unfortunately that's when he started to pull on me, but he said (after we shut it down at 70) it wasn't as good of a victory as he expected for the fact that his bonneville SE couldn't shake a 6000 LE until past 50MPH.

These cars do have power and are the best little "sleepers". I never got around to modd'ing mine, but I'm sure you could easily open up another 30 or 40 HP on those things and wipe the smile off the 17 year old's with their brand new Civics or Accords.

Hello everyone, I have a 1989 2.8L V6 Pontiac 6000 LE. I do not know the exact horsepower... however if anyone does know I would like you to tell me. I also own a 2.4L V4 Honda Accord 2006. They both are very beautiful cars..the Honda puts out 166HP and the V6 accord puts out 252...so I have no idea why you people are talking bad about Honda's. The old Honda's are pieces of garbage honestly. I love my Pontiac it drives so well however now it is sitting dead in my garage because it is in need of a new Heater Core and I do not know how to install it. If anyone can help me my email is...

I have a Pontiac 6000 and it's probably the worst car I've ever driven.
