Rattles from the dash, doors and rear hatch.
Squeaks caused by bad welds in the "A" pillar.
Paint problems with bubbles and poor finish on the roof & door area.
Power seat mechanism would go "up" all by itself.
Constant whining sound from the hub seals when driving at low speeds.
Brakes make clunking sound when released from a full stop.
This Explorer has been in for a service 14 times and for 28 days, and most of these problems remain unresolved.
Having also owned another older Explorer that has been trouble free, I am not impressed with the number of defects and low quality of this vehicle.
All of the problems I've had with this lemon overshadow anything good I could ever have to say about it.
Don't feel bad, I bought a 2000 Explorer new. Had to have a new motor put in at 36,000 miles.
Yes I too have had nothing but problems with my 2000 Explorer. At 39,000 the engine was knocking and all they had to say was that it was a good thing I have an extended warranty. And it still knocks. It is a piece of (*#!@#) and I will never buy another Ford.
The first and last Ford I will ever buy
I love my 2000 Ford Explorer Limited. I bought it used after have many problems with a 2001 Ranger Edge that was bought back by Ford. My Explorer has 66,0000 miles on it. 20,000 miles I have put on it in the year I have owned it and have had no problems. I love it!
I have a 2000 Ford Explorer that I am putting in the shop every other month at this point. The knocking sound that I'm reading other people are experiencing is most likely the Exhaust Manifold. There is a "Silent" recall on this. Don't bother getting it fixed though because it will just break again. I have had mine repaired once and replaced twice. It's not under warranty anymore and Ford won't pick up the tab so it costs $1K every year... like clockwork. I have also pretty much replaced the entire front end suspension and Some parts numerous times (Tie Rods and Bearings). This truck is junk and I can't get rid of it now. I will never ever ever buy another Ford.
The paint on our 2000 Explorer has started to crackle and flake. I was told that this has been an issue with the dark blue color (Dark Wedgewood Blue). Otherwise, no real issues.
I bought my used 2000 Limited last year. I love the looks, and the comfort with all of the features. The annoying thing is that it rides like a #%%% * skateboard from 1970 (with the steel wheels). My '94 Z/28 rode better!
Anyone re-work suspension with any luck?
Thanks!
PS...Hope mine doesn't turn to crap like some of the others!
Like all of the comments above, my paint has cracked and bubbled, the wedgewood blue, engine replaced at 72000, both front bearings replaced, most of the transmission wiring and sensors replaced (some crushed when they put in the new motor-sorry, the re-manufactured motor), tie rods, all ball joints numerous times, the hatch rattles worse than my Probe did, 15 shop visits in under 2 years due to problems. Paid over $2000 for warranty, was told that I had over $10,000 worth of work done on it!
I'm thinking extremely hard about purchasing a 2000 Ford Explorer. Any suggestions. Good or Bad. I have read the previous, but that all can't be bad can they. (The truck has 70,000 miles on it.)
Re: 2002 Ford Explorer V8. Run, don't walk away from this vehicle; if you must buy, but two of them so you'll have something to drive when the other is in the shop. This vehicle is fine in the creature-comforts department, but when it comes to drive train and reliability, forget it!
