1991 Chevrolet Cavalier VL from North America - Comments

"Chevrolet's staple is a joke"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Brakes went out at 65,000 miles.

Entire cooling system (ie. vent, A/C, heat, defrost) gone by 61,000 miles.

The trunk is not water proof.

Dashboard was warped beyond repair when I bought it.

Electrical system is not reliable. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Engine overheats while sitting at traffic lights.

Transmission constantly sounds like it is revving too high.

Windshield wipers work sometimes and do not work others.

General comments?

Paid $3000 for it. After having owned a 1994 Cavalier from the same dealer, I will never buy an American car again. More specifically, I'll never consider a Chevy again. I've put $2200 in repairs into it and I can't recommend it to anyone. Chevrolet's are terrible cars!

Next time buy a Chevrolet Metro, that's one car that won't let you down.

Why don't you take it to a reliable mechanic because I own one and it runs great. Oh yeah I forget you may want to give it a tune up from time to time and brakes only work if you use them before the traffic lights and not slamming them on all the time that is why there are so many terrible drivers like you.

I will be honest: I own a 1991 Cavalier, VL trim, that was not in good shape a few months ago. It has 143,000 miles currently, but nothing has gone out of the ordinary with this car. It has some minor body damage, but some body compounds have alleviated the pain. Look at it this way: there are thousands of these cars still running all over the place.

I also have one. It's a 91 Vl and it runs great. I only paid 400.00, and it also came with a pioneer CD player and a 15 in the trunk. The only thing wrong with it ia that the wingow regulator is screwed up and I have the window taped up till I can fix it. I just learned how to drive a manual. I am thinking og puting a new clutch an a full diza racing huricane body kit on it. I also might throw a QUAD 4 in it along with a duel exsaust kit and turbo and ram air. I am an artist so I will also hook up the paint job. It needs one because you can see crows footing up close. The interior will also need to be fixed up. Its nearly mint so It won'tbee hard.

I have a 1991 Cavalier V.L. automatic, and other than the dash, when I received the car, it was in perfect condition. I have put the car beyond the thoughts of GM when they designed it, and the car is still running. The only downfall is that there aren't a whole lot of things that I can do performance wise to it.

3000$ for a 10 year old Cavalier is a ridiculous price. In 2001 there black book value (in Canada at least) was of approx.800$-2200$.

They really have to be your favorite car to put up with things like that.

I have owned 3 cavaliers, my first one was an RS, and I blew the tranny and motor, and windshield wipers stopped working.

The second was a 94 Z24 that was totaled in Maine, then shipped up to the states for parts. Instead they fixed it up and sold it to me. Went to get it registered and they said I couldn't cause it was smashed in the states. Well whoever restored that car did a damn good job cause you could not tell it was in an accident and the car was in MINT condition. The damn flooring and seats were still a fresh gray just like new, and not even 150 kms on it.

My next Cavalier was another Z24; brakes went the day after I bought it, fuel pump went, the power steering leaks in several spots, but now fixed so it's basically whoever buys the car brand new I suppose decides on the life span. How they drive it, and how they treat it; by the time it gets to you it's crap or it was well maintained.
