What things have gone wrong with the car?

I get hot air when I want cold, the radiator drains of water but nobody can find where it goes to.

The automatic choke works when it feels like it and lots of other little things go wrong.

It is sluggish and underpowered.

General comments?

Personally I think Mercedes are way over rated and really very very bad value for money.

But if your ego is bigger than your brain you can probably overlook the fact you could buy a far superior car for a third of the price you pay for a Merc.

Overall I think after driving one for two years they are rubbish.

A Mercedes if is only good if you are able to buy one with a decent engine and spec. I drive a full spec 300E 24V auto and its the best car I've ever owned. It has done 200,000 miles with only the exhaust replaced.

Water leaks and nobody knows where it goes? Slow and under powered? Sounds like a blown head gasket to me.

Bought the 200E last December. It was owned by 4 previous owners. I changed all the essential stuff like shock absorbers & tie rods & a top overhaul on the engine. Replaced new tyres etc..

Spent about US$3000 in all.

Still driving it today. Very solid & reliable car. Does not give me any problems at all. I have driven two other German makes & three Japanese makes. Truly this is the best car I have owned. No doubt about it.

I think the important thing is to get the right workshop - one that knows Mercedes cars well enough to repair it properly.

Best Regards.

The problems you are complaining about are very easy to fix! But if you do not have a proper mechanic with basic car knowledge which you obviously don't have then take it to somebody who knows what they are doing, that way your car will be going as it should agian. owning any pretige car on the market means miantenence costs which you obviously don't want to pay. you should consider selling the merc and get a lada or something simalar as you may find that offending its make and qauility can be justified. furthermore mercs are certianly not overrated as (bmw's r) they are genuinly superb cars which munch miles like they where inches. I can say this from experiances, as I haved owned 6 mercs in the last 19 years and have had no worries at all. this includes a w124 200 which I have owned from new (16 years now) and have done 460,000 miles in it. The car is noisy, but still outperforms many new vehicles on the road and is so reliable its like a dam clock. just keeps on ticking for years and is always going to work as it did when new.

Mercedes used to be superb cars. Used to! I own 2 (1980 and 1989) models, and 2 so-called Mercedes from recent times (230-V and A-class). The new ones are only giving me all kind of problems, whilst the old ones are faithful. So I will keep buying more Mercedes, but only old ones!

Why are some people so patriotic about merc/ bm's.

Yes, they are over rated

Yes, they were good

No, the new ones are bad.

No point in one saying 'I did 300,000 miles' whilst 15 say 'worst mistake since buying an annual rail ticket'.

One good and ten bad means rubbish.

I just thought I would let you know that when the w124 was first released in 1986 it was rated to be the wourlds best car. this was decided as they jugded panel fit over jaguars of that time and of the design and most most of all build qaulity over that of roll royces. and that's a fact!!!

I just bought a 1990 200E that have travelled over 295,000km, the engine is in good condition, very smooth running, especially at cruising speed of 80 to 90 kmh. Transmission is smooth, no jerky and noisy gear change.

I have test driven a few before choosing this car, the other cars have noisy engine, and some shudders violently when stationary.

Using 98 octane fuel also help engine performance.

Mr Gerald Koh, are you still using your 200E, any comments?

I am interested in purchasing a 1993 200E. I have heard that the 1993 model was when they began using the 16 valve engine.

Some friends have told me that the pre '93 models are more durable and that the 16 valve models have been known to wear out more.

Can anyone comment on this? Also, is the 16 valve engine more fuel efficient then the 8 valve one?

Any feedback would be very helpful. Thanks.
