1992 Mazda 929 from North America - Comments

"Powerful, comfortable and reliable"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Never had a mechanical failure. Only costs involved have been tires, brakes, oil changes, but it will need an exhaust soon.

General comments?

I love this car. It's never let me down. It has a few oddities, most notably a small trunk, no glove box or cup holders. 1992 is when the body style changed, it sorta' looks like a Jag, but also like a Lexus. I think I've been asked about 50 times "What is it?".

The 24 valve V6 pumps out a healthy 200 HP and the transmission includes a "hold" feature which prevents it from up-shifting for those times when you want max power.

Comfortable, reliable and stylish. Nice!

I also bought a 93' Mazda 929 used. This car looks and drives marvellously. What I found out is that if you keep the transmission in overdrive, that means disengaging the "hold" button and shifting into "S", you can rev up your engine higher and this will achieve maximum power. Note: This is only when you want a fast launch off. Be sure not go over 98 Km/h (61 MPH) as instructed in the manual. Also, from what I have read in reviews, many people complained about transmission failures. Mine still runs strong and silky smooth. My advice to all 929 owners is to install an automatic transmission cooler as well as flushing the fluids every couple of years. This will most likely prolong the life of the transmission therefore avoiding the costly repairs in the future.

Yea, the 929 was great. My 1992 went well from 1997 at 54,000 to over 120,000 in 2002. Sold it for two year old LHS.

Problems were costly transmission, rear shocks, etc.

People often asked what it was. Jag styling, Jap engineering and so on.

Agree the car still turns heads. Good power delivery, nice cornering, comfy sport touring. Few problems I've had though:

transmission jerks in 1st gear, smoking exhaust (burning oil??), door panels getting loose, no glove box, no cup holders, no adjustable steering wheel, low ceiling clearance, pretty small trunk for a car that size. Apart from that the car is still a blast to drive especially on the highway. Like someone said it looks like a $30000 sedan.

I loved my 929 when I bought it in 99. It had about 78k miles on it and the features were perfect. It's quite luxurious and definitely turns heads when it's clean.

But I have had a lot of problems with it. I've replaced the transmission (approx. $2k), the water pump (twice), muffler, exhaust, and more. The parts on this car are costly.

I realize it's an old car now, but I can't wait to be rid of its problems. Too bad all that luxury couldn't have a better long term rating.

Sept 01 2006 - just bought a 93 Mazda 929 - replaced exhaust - but everything else seems strong. 166,000 miles with no fluid leaks. I paid peanuts, but no drink holders drives me nuts. My poor toy poodle can't find a place to ride without tumbling around.

The only reason I sold my 929 was that the power train is too much for teen age drivers. Both my kids are in their first year of driving and this car has too much power for inexperienced drivers.

The power windows did have problems, but overall the 929 out lasted a rough family of drivers and gave me 2500 back in my pocket.

I also own a 1994 GS300 Lexus. It is another excellent car and more rugged than the Mazda 929; however the Mazda has reached 120 mph with more left whereas the Lexus seemed to top out around 120.

A very good car. I had no transmission problems.

I still own my 1992 929 and love it. The crazy part is I got it for 1000 dollars back in 2006 with 108K on it. Well I have beat her to death the past year (156K) and the only few problems I have is a stutter in the tranny when I got from 30-40mph, the window motors failed in the rear and the passenger side is almost shot too, but I found out that it is a normal problem with the 929. The rear shocks were bad when I got it, but I never replaced them and the car only rides a little rough because of it, But if I had the option to buy it again I would do it without a second thought. But to anyone trying to get one keep in mind PARTS ARE HARD TO FIND AND NORMALLY QUITE EXPENSIVE. Rear Shocks - $302 a shock. Tire Rod - $275, Tranny - $1200-$5200.

I own a 1992 92, got it in 2005 and I love it. Very fast and even thought it's an old car, still turn heads. Handles very good on the highway and very steady at high speeds. Solid body, not like these new model cars. Problem is parts are very expensive when they are actually and the controls for the rear window stopped working. Trans stutters at about 25 to 30 mph. Small trunk and no cup holder. Trans takes a while to respond when trying to overtake. Apart from these minor glitches I love my ride. Wish I had a new one in excellent condition.
