"Quick reliable car and cheap to run"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Back wiper broke down-easily fixed.

Points on the engine blew.

Changed engine at 127,000 miles.

Boot welded due to rust and the wings also replaced.

Tendency to burn oil.

General comments?

Getting 37-40 miles to the gallon for a 14 year old car is great.

Handles brilliantly with 15''T.S.W. alloy wheels (195).

Seats weren't great so I put Sprinter seats into it.

Fast for a 1 liter getting 105 m.p.h. on a straight road.

Parts are easy to find and cheap.

105 mph in a 1 litre starlet!!! you need to get your speedo checked. maybe you were being towed by an impreza turbo!!!

Actually, I've had a 1987 Starlet as well with a 1 liter engine and after driving it my style for a while I was able to get it up to 165 Kilometers per hour, which does translate to approx. 105 miles per hour, just don't always drive it like granny's car and it will do that speed.

Go to www.globalcar.com and you will see that the top speed of this car when new was 150 kph.

Unlikely yours is faster except downhill or with strong following wind.

It's normal for youngsters who know nothing about cars to believe their own car for some magically inexplicable reason is faster than all others of its type.

So don't feel too bad.

Driving style is unimportant, top speed is top speed no matter who's driving.

Well, if you consider 29 young...I'm flattered.

Fact is, that the speedometer on a straight and level stretch of freeway said 165 kilometers per hour, so unless Toyota speedometers are badly calibrated, that was the speed it was doing. As for trying to talk tough about that car, that kite doesn't go up for me. The Starlet was just a to and from work car for me aside from my real love, a 1977 Lincoln Continental Town Car. In fact, I was heavily displeased with the Starlet, not because it had problems a few times in the short time I've had it, but because it was the lowest in the luxury chain. Pride does not describe my feelings about that specific car, in fact I myself was totally amazed of the speed the speedometer told me the car was doing. And for your info, the speedometer goes up to 180 KPH even though it'll only reach that speed if you are indeed going down a long steep hill with a lot of wind from behind.

Greetings, Marvin.
